I Got Thiss (21-1) Pulls Major Upset In Remington Park Oaks

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK–APRIL 29, 2024–Let go at odds of 21-1, I Got Thiss snapped a seven-race win streak of heavy post-time favorite Alliekat Dynasty (who finished third) in the $188,975 Remington Park Oaks Monday afternoon at Remington Park. Sequoyah (44-1) was second.

I Got Thiss dug in under jockey Cristian Esqueda to complete the 400 yards in :19.849 seconds, for a half-length winning margin into a 5 mph headwind.  It was the second career win in 11 starts for the daughter of leading sire Apollitical Jess. The $75,590 Oaks winner's purse boosted her earnings total to $97,391.

Juvenal Licona-Vazquez trains the Oklahoma-bred filly for owner Bryton Dewald. The late Walter "Dick" Harrison bred I Got Thiss from the multiple Grade 3 winning Tres Seis mare Senorita Tres, the dam of four black type including Oklahoma Derby winner Politicaly Correct.

Licona-Vazquez choked back tears as he talked about the victory.

"I want to dedicate this win to my mother," he said, voice cracking. "Biggest win of my life. This filly is little, but her heart is bigger than anyone knows.

Licona-Vazquez and his owner joined forces again this year after being separated for a short stint.

“I picked up this filly (from him) in early March after we got the team back together,” said Licona-Vazquez. “This was his best horse. She proved she likes the distance and I thought this (400 yards) would be perfect for her.”

Runner-up Sequoyah, under champion jockey Francisco Calderon, ran the biggest race of her career to earn $32,126 for second. Trainer M. Heath Taylor saddled the daughter of leading sire Hes Relentless in only her sixth career start for owners Larry and Bobbie Rice.  Still a maiden, Sequoyah was bred by Flag Ranch LLC from the Corona Cartel mare A Snowy Cartel. She has earned $41,566.

Post-time favorite Alliekat Dynasty shared the lead but settled for third, earning $20,787. It was only the second career loss in nine starts for the Arrowhead Racing-owned daughter of four-time world champion sire FDD Dynasty. Ruben Ruiz trains the Jahree Standridge-bred filly out of Pollitical Scorpion by Apollitical Jess. The Grade 2 three-time stakes winner has earned $213,738.

Alliekat Dynasty had won the $70,000 FL Lady Bugs Stakes at Remington Park on May 27, 2023; the Grade 2, $203,000 OHA Mystery Futurity at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla., on September 25, 2023, and the Grade 2 $50,000 Decketta Stakes at Remington Park this meet on March 16. It was the filly’s first loss in stakes company.

I Got Thiss paid a whopping $45.60 to win, $24 to place, and $8.60 to show across the board. She combined with runner-up Sequoyah (44-1) to pay $832.20 for a $2 exacta. The 50-cent trifecta, even with the odds-on favorite third, returned $1,164.50 on a 50-cent wager.

I Am Candy, Aj Gold Heart, Jc Wild Queen, Dezigner Jeanz, Lady Lew, Bv Miss Mona, and Countess Tres Seis completed the field.
