OKLAHOMA CITY, OK–MAY 2, 2024–Jockey Edwin Escobedo entered the night in fourth place in the jockeys’ standings and scored four big wins Thursday night at Remington Park. The victories moved him past Francisco Calderon and within one of second place behind rider Roman Cruz.

Escobedo was the top rider at Remington Park last year with 43 victories. After his four-bagger on Thursday night, he has 25 wins on the meet, behind only Ali Rivera’s 28 in first and Roman Cruz’s 26 in second. Escobedo made three of those four trips to the winner’s circle with his top trainer Jason Olmstead, who moved into a tie for fifth with Eddie Willis in the trainers’ standings at 16 wins. They trail John Stinebaugh (19), Matt Whitekiller (18), Toby Keeton (17) and Dee Keener (17).

Escobedo began his night with a win in the second race aboard NCC Cherry Bottom (9-5 favorite) for trainer Samuel Mendoza. His wins for Escobedo came in the fifth in the saddle of Anna Belle (7-5 favorite); the seventh, booting home Valiant Candy Tree (2-1 favorite), and the 10th aboard Jess a Frenchy Girl (17-1) in the featured allowance race.

That longshot hooked up with post-time favorite Paint Me Prettie (9-5) from the start and they battled to the wire. At the end of the 350-yard race, Escobedo squeezed out everything that was needed from this 3-year-old filly against allowance non-winners of three career victories. She is owned by Brenda Reiswig of Bismarck, N.D. The daughter of Apollitical Jess, out of the PYC Paint Your Wagon mare Veuve Clicquot, was bred in Oklahoma by Cavenaugh Quarter Horses. She was purchased at the 2022 Fall Heritage Place Mixed Sale for $92,000. With the victory Thursday night, Jess a Frenchy Girl improved her lifetime to 11 starts, three wins, one second and three thirds for a bankroll of $66,055.

Jess a Frenchy Girl paid $36.20 to win, $12.80 to place and $6.20 to show. Her winning time was :17.451 for a speed-index of 96 over the fast track. Paint Me Prettie finished a half-length back in second, followed by Firstchickonthemoon (4-1), another three-quarters of a length behind.

Winning the last race of the night at 17-1 keyed a massive payout in the last chance Pick 3, including races 8-9-10. A 50-cent wager returned $5,432.25 to only one winner, who took down the entire pool. The winners of the eighth and ninth races were Eye Do Tell (59-1) and Intrepyd (8-1), respectively.

Remington Park racing continues Friday night with first post time of 6 p.m. CDT. Saturday racing begins at Noon with the card set to finish before the big simulcast of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Post time on Sunday will be the usual 4 p.m. for live racing. All times are Central.
