AJAX, ONT—SEPTEMBER 16, 2014—Multiple stakes winner Country Box Deluxe exploded late to defeat First Down The Track by a neck in the second of two trials contested Tuesday afternoon at Ajax Downs for the Alex Picov Memorial Championship.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to the Ontario racetrack Tuesday, September 30 and vie for the winner's share of a $100,000-added purse going 440 yards.
Ridden by jockey Cory Spataro, Country Boy Deluxe completed his task in :22.070 seconds, earning a 97 speed index. The time was not only the fastest of the two trials but drafted the four fastest qualifiers into the final.
Stan Webb owns-and-trains the 5-year-old son of champion Country Chicks Man from the Corona Cartel mare Corona Deluxe. Bred in Maryland by Lucas Racing, Inc., Country Boy Deluxe has a (27) 8-3-4 record and earnings of $103,126. He has won his last three starts.
First Down The Track held onto the second fastest time of :22.120, a 95 speed index, for owners Richard Wincikaby and DK Training Centre. Lance Robertson and Max Anderson bred the 4-year-old Corona Cartel mare in Utah from the First Down Dash mare First Down Runner. Also a multiple stakes winner, the sorrel miss has won six races and earned $147,828. Chelsey WIllick had the riding assignment.
One Famous Glass was a half-length winner in the first trial over Mitford to post the fifth fastest clocking of :22.390. Marty Mercieca rode the 4-year-old One Famous Eagle gelding for owners Carol Robertson, Jaime Robertson and Dr. Charles Hall. Bryn Robertson conditions the Texas bred our of Quick Glass, by Royal Quick Glass. Burnett Ranches LLC bred the multiple stakes winner of $123,812.
