Impressive Maiden Win Gets Top Time in AQRA Turf Paradise Open Futurity Trials

PHOENIX, AZ—NOVEMBER 23, 2014—Carters Dare, a lightly raced Carters Cartel colt from the West Coast, broke his maiden Sunday in an impressive 1¼-length victory over three-time futurity winner Smoke On The Water to set the top qualifying time for the AQRA Turf Paradise Open Futurity Trials.

The 10 fastest two-year-olds, from the three trials contested over 400 yards on Sunday afternoon, will return to Turf Paradise on Sunday, December 7 and vie for the winner's share of a $17,500-added purse.

Making his fist start since a third place effort in the Kindergarten Futurity trials at Los Alamitos Race Course in May, Carters Dare broke fourth but drew clear late to post the top qualifying time of :19.713 seconds, a 103 speed index. Carlos Marquez was up.

Ricardo Ramirez saddled the bay colt to his first win three starts for owner Yuriana Ramirez. Allred Brothers, LLC bred Carters Dare in Arizona from the Shazoom mare Dare To Zoom. Owner Ramirez purchased the colt for $20,000 at the 2013 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale.

Coming off a fifth place effort in the October 4th John Deere Turf Paradise Juvenile Challenge, Chicks Deville defeated Arizona QRA Futurity winner Jess A Cowboy by a nose in the first trial to post the second fastest time of :19.729 seconds, a 102 speed index.

Benito Guillen Vega conditions the Chicks Regard gelding for owner Cesar Marquez Castaneda. David Reyes-Frisby rode the multiple stakes finalist to his third win in eight starts this season. He has now qualified for three futurities at Turf Paradise and one at SunRay Park. Mesquite Pass Farms, Inc. bred the bay from the Streakin La Jolla mare La Jolla Sioux.

Saddled by Matthew M. Fales, Jess A Cowboy held on for the third fastest clocking of :19.733, also a 102 speed index. The Dejon gelding, a homebred racing for Larry Stark, entered the race off a win in the Arizona QRA Futurity on November 2. Tanner Thedford rides the super consistent colt with a (5) 2-2-1 record and earnings of $22,795. He is out of the Canth mare Secret Return.

Fales also saddled Jess One Look who finished third in the same trial to get the fourth fastest time of :19.819 seconds. Jorge Bourdieu rode the Jesse James Jr filly for owners Elaine Cota-Robles and Ralph and Carolyn Fales. MJ Farms bred the sorrel miss in New Mexico from the Lanes Leinster mare Champagne Lane.

The aforementioned three-time futurity winner Smoke On The Water, who finished second to the fastest qualifier in the final trial, set the fifth fastest time of :19.899. The Spit Curl Jess gelding has won five of nine starts this season, for owner Norma Reyes and trainer Benito Guillen Vega, earning over $95,400. David Reyes-Frisby had the riding assignment aboard the Robert A. Gentry Kentucky-bred out of Smokin (TB), by Smoke Glacken (TB).

Trainer Matthew M. Fales saddled four of the 10 qualifiers.
