Moonin The Eagle Returns to Win South Florida Quarter Horse Derby

HIALEAH, FL—MARCH 1, 2015—Fastest qualifier Moonin The Eagle dueled De Mille early then kicked clear under jockey Ramon Sanchez to defeat Louisiana Legends by 1¼ lengths in the $200,125 South Florida Quarter Horse Derby conducted at Hialeah Park Sunday afternoon.

The lightly raced son of One Famous Eagle, from the champion First Down Dash mare Your First Moon, covered the 440 yards in :21.438 seconds, a 99 speed index. He used the $84,052 winner's purse to boost his earnings mark to $177,215 with a (4) 3-1-0 record. He was second in the $427,575 Hialeah Park Derby two races back.

Rolando Almanza conditions the half-brother to 2014 Champion 3-Year-Old Moonist for owner Gregorio Garcia Garza. Vessels Stallion Farm, LLC bred the gray colt in California.

Adrian Soto saddled Louisiana Legends to his second place finish for owner Alejandro Sanchez. Patton Farms bred the Jet Black Patriot gelding in Louisiana from the Some Dasher mare Sheza Cash Dasher. Ridden by Oscar Delgado, Louisiana Legends earned $36,022 for his effort.

Ipolito, a Florida bred son of Apollo (TB), picked up $24,015 for his third place finish. Also trained by Adrian Soto, the 3-year-old colt is owned by Ignacio Garduno Soto. Osdany Leal had the riding assignment. Sam Green bred Ipolito from the Chicks Beduino mare Seychelle.

Completing the field were De Mille, Seize The Win, Roaster, Jumpn Streak, Girls Can Dash, Red Corona Warrior and Dashing Clouds.

For the second time this season, Hialeah Park established a new all-sources wagering handle record. Sunday’s total topped out at $580,372 for the day, $54,202 better that the previous mark of $526,170 set on February 2, 2015.
