OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MAY 2, 2015—The $100,000 Sooner State Stakes(RG1) for Oklahoma-breds was easily taken by Gold Digging Ashley as the 3-year-old filly crushed her older foes in winning by three lengths Saturday night at Remington Park.
Owned by Dr. Edward Leslie of Frankfort, Ky. and trained by Ty Blackwell, Gold Digging Ashley grabbed the lead shortly after the start of the 400-yard race. Under jockey James Flores, she quickly drew away to win by three lengths in a sharp :19.371 seconds over a fast track.
“She’s just a gold digger. She likes to win. When they left there she pretty much bombed away from there and I knew it was over,” Flores said. “I just got after her and she responded phenomenally as she always does. I just stayed after her and she did her job.”
The only blemish in four races this spring at Remington Park for Gold Digging Ashley was a second-place performance in the Oklahoma Derby on March 21 to Poltically Correct. She won her trial for that race by 3¼ lengths. After losing the final, she came back to win the Mr Master Bug Stakes for Oklahoma-bred 3-year-olds on April 19 by 2½ lengths. Facing older horses for the first time didn’t seem to hinder the talented Gold Digging Ashley.
“She’s been a really nice filly for us. She’s continued to get better and better so I just try to stay out of her way and not mess here up,” Blackwell said. “We’ll try to see what she can do and just try to keep her going.”
Gold Digging Ashely has won eight of her 12 career starts with three wins at Remington Park this season. The daughter of Inseperable from the Heza Fast Man mare Ashleys Gold Digger, Gold Digging Ashley made $59,730 for her Sooner State Stakes. She has now rolled up a career total of $355,195. She was bred in Oklahoma by her owner. She is out a half-sister to the dam of 2014 Champion 2-Year-Old Kiss My Hocks, last season's Ruidoso Futurity(G1) winner who has earned $692,380.
Gold Digging Ashley provided the first Sooner State Stakes win for all of her connections.
Ed Melzer's Priceless Feature picked up $19,910 for his second place effort, boosting his career earnings total to nearly $635,000. Eddie D. Willis conditions the multiple graded stakes winning son of Feature Mr Jess from the Corona Cartel mare Southern Price. Ridden by Jimmy D. Brooks, Priceless Feature was bred by Sam Green.
Bp Wagon Train, a multiple graded stakes-placed son of leading sire Pyc Paint Your Wagon, races for Joel Tipton, Tommy Hays, Bobby Barnett and Charles Forbes, Jr. Trained by Bobby Martinez, the six-time winner picked up $10,950 for his third place finish to bring his earnings mark to $263,988. Bill Price bred Bp Wagon Train from the First Down Dash mare Ladys Is First. Saul Ramirez, Jr. had the riding assignment.
Completing the Sooner State Stakes(RG1) field were Rocketair, Nellie Delaney, Kuhl Wave, A Toss Up, Wagon Tales, Painted Laico Bird and Bp Southern Dynasty.
Jockey G.R. Carter put up four wins on the Saturday program. He padded his lead in the rider standings with wins aboard Honky Tonk Podie ($7 to win) in race one followed by Mai Dashing Hero ($4.80) in race two. Then in race six he brought home Style On Speed Dial ($5) followed by CC Spittin Image ($7.40) providing the fourth triumph of the night in race nine.
The four wins for Carter give him 41 on the season, a full 20 ahead of second-place Ivan Carnero who has 21 wins.
Remington Park will wrap up the racing weekend on Sunday afternoon with a 10-race card underway at 1:30pm.
Open daily at 10:30am for casino gaming and simulcast racing, Remington Park features the Bricktown Brewery on the casino floor. Admission, general parking and valet parking are always free at Remington Park, home of the $1,000,000 Heritage Place Futurity on Saturday, May 30.
