Tac My Chances Steps Up In Mile High Derby Trials

AURORA, CO—JULY 30, 2015—Claimed for $10,000 on March 28, Tac My Chances defeated multiple stakes winner Toshi Yoshi by a nose in the second of six trials Thursday afternoon for the Mile High Derby at Arapahoe Park. The :19.758 clocking was the fastest qualifying time posted from the 51 three-year-olds who competed.

The 10 fastest are set to return to Arapahoe Park Saturday, August 15th to vie for the winner's share of $144,000 purse going 400 yards.

Owned-and-trained by Rodrigo Covarrubias, Tac My Chances scored his fourth consecutive win in as many starts this season under jockey Jesus Salazar. Covarrubias claimed the gelded son of multiple stakes sire Tac It Like a Man from his breeder JK Running Horses, LLC at Remington Park. He picked up Allowance wins at Remington Park and Fair Meadows before heading to Colorado to compete in the Mile High Derby trials.

Out of the Thoroughbred mare Salty and Steady, by Salt Lake, Tac My Chances' record stands at (7) 5-1-0 and he has earned $53,180.

Coming off a win in the Cherry Creek Derby on June 6, Toshi Yoshi held on to the second fastest clocking of :19.767 seconds. The Colorado-bred son of Pool also won the Cherry Creek Futurity last season and has earned $91,646.

Manuel Orozco conditions Toshi Yoshi for owner/breeder Dana Yoshida-Orozco. He is out of The Corona mare Mairis Money Maker.

Spender, winner of the Rocky Mountain Derby in his last start, drew off to win by 1¾ lengths in the fifth trial to post the third fastest time of :19.864 seconds. Russell Vicchrilli had the riding assignment aboard the Stel Corona gelding for owner Aislinn Vences and trainer Miguel Pena.

Bred in California, form the Separatist mare Acquisitive, Spender has won seven of 12 career starts and earned $66,722. Edward C. Allred is the breeder.

Sweet Solid Rock, runner-up in the Rocky Mountain Derby, defeated U C Me Streakin by half-a-length in the first trial while recording the fourth fastest time of :19.935 seconds. Tim Weeder trains the Rock Solid Jess gelding for owner Robert Reed. Bred in Texas by Silva Robles, Sweet Solid Rock has earned just over $40,000. He is out of the Sweet First Down mare Tf Lil Sweet N Easy.

Multiple Grade 2-placed El Damazo won the final trial by 1¼-lengths under jockey Adrian Ramos. The super consistent son of champion sire Desirio has a record of (9) 4-4-1. Second in the West Texas Futurity(G2) at 2 and the West Texas Derby this year, the bay colt was also second in the Animas Stakes and third in the Conquistador Stakes earlier this year.

Jaime Martinez conditions the 3-year-old for the partnership of Daniel Balderrama, Juan Castro and Sergio Castro. El Damazo recorded the seventh fastest time of :19.890 seconds. Bred by Jim and Marilyn Helzer, from the Invisible Injun mare Invisible Streaker, El Damazo has earned more than $125,000.
