Unheralded Volcom Bay, Champ Jess Good Candy Lead Qualifiers To Record Ruidoso Derby on Sunday

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—MAY 29, 2016—Bennie and Teresa Jeter's Volcom Bay, who has never won a stakes, topped the qualifiers while champion and All American Futurity winner Jess Good Candy remained undefeated from six starts in the trials to the record Grade 1, $1,040,000 Ruidoso Derby on Sunday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.

The previous record purse for the Ruidoso Derby was $943,279 set in 2014.

The horses with the 10-fastest times from the 14 trials return for finals on June 11. The next 10-fastest qualifiers gain preference for the $100,000 Mr Jess Perry on the same program.

Volcom Bay dominated the fifth trial when she drew out to a two-and-one-half-length victory in :19.618 for the 400 yards while facing a seven miles-per-hour headwind. That remained as the top time from the remaining trials.

"She was fantastic, she is getting better all the time," said jockey Rodrigo Sigala Vallejo. "She likes this distance. Today she was very fast out of the gate and gave a consistent effort. I've ridden Volcom Bay a few times now and feel comfortable aboard her."

The Judd Kearl-trained Volcom Bay raced to her third win from 10 starts with the trial score. The Volcom-sired filly's best stakes effort was a second-place run in the $93,000 Texas Classic Juvenile.

P.K. Thomas bred Volcom Bay in Oklahoma from the Chicks Beduino mare Miss Lethal.

PV Quarter Horse Farms' homebred Jess Good Candy should be the strong favorite in the Ruidoso Derby after stretching his undefeated streak.

The big powerhouse pulled away for Jm Mr Evan to win the 10th trial by an expanding one-and-one-quarter lengths. The Good Reason SA son was timed in :19.784 for the fifth-fastest time on a day when six finalists came out of two other trials. He ran into a four mph headwind.

Ivan Carnero was up on Jess Good Candy.

Jess Good Candy, the 2015 champion two-year-old and champion two-year-old colt, capped his championship campaign with a neck win over One Fabulous Eagle in the Grade 1, $3 million All American Futurity. One Fabulous Eagle was in the same Ruidoso Derby trial, however suffered all chance to contend after a very troubled start.

Trainer Clint Crawford prepped Jess Good Candy for his Ruidoso campaign at Remington Park. In his only start at the Oklahoma City track, Jess Good Candy handled Oklahoma-breds over 350 yards in the $70,000 Mr Master Handicap over 350 yards.

"The race at Remington Park helped him a lot," said Crawford. "I think you need a race before coming up to this altitude (6900 feet). He was a little fresh for this race.

"The All American Derby is our goal. We'll get through the Ruidoso Derby and take it from there." The All American Derby purse is estimated at $2.5 million. The colt could be supplemented to the Grade 1, $1.2 million (est.) Rainbow Derby.

Jess Good Candy is out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Jess Send Candy.

The second through fourth-fastest qualifiers came out of the 13th trial while the eighth through 10th qualifiers came out of the 14th and final trial.

The second-fastest qualifier is Adame Racing, LLC's Always Ur Last Call. He is a Tempting Dash-sired gelding who won his maiden in his previous start, which was his third out.

The member of the Mario Sanchez stable won the 13th trial in :19.629 with Cesar Gomez up. Tyler Graham bred the gelding in Texas from the Mr Jess Perry mare Sixydeperry.
