Caraves Waves Returns to Win Jerry Stojan Memorial Futurity

GRAND PRAIRIE—JULY 24, 2016—Fastest qualifier Caraves Waves returned Sunday to defeat Sherry Baby by three-quarters in the $22,849(US) Jerry Stojan Memorial Futurity at Grande Prairie.

Ridden by jockey Scott Sterr, Caraves Waves completed the 300 yards in :15.740 seconds, a 93-speed index into a 25 mph crosswind. Trainer Randy Cunningham saddled the Wave Carver gelding to his fourth this third win in four starts for owners Shady Lane Stables and Dale Zukowski.

The gray gelding, a Shady Lane Stables homebred from the Corona Cartel mare Special Corona, earned $10,283(US) on Sunday to bring his bankroll to $22,652. His only loss was a second place finish in the RG3 Alberta Bred Futurity last month.

Sherry Baby was a game second for owner Charles Stojan and trainer William Leach. Robert Curtis bred the Stel Corona filly in California from the Meter Me Gone mare Velvet Meter. Jockey Freddy Fuentes was on board for the filly's third career start. She earned $4,570(US) for the effort.

Another California-bred Cowboy 109 finished a neck back in third for owners Bob Perlich, Brian Hinken and Bob McCutcheon. Buckey Stockwell conditions the Favorite Cartel colt out of Pretty Jet High by On A High. Jose Ocha had the riding assignment on the Steve D. Burns, DVM bred 2-year-old. He picked up $2,742(US).

Tahma Chop, Eye On Corona, Dashin By All, Heza Riot and Pink Power completed the field.
