LOS ALAMITOS, CA—MARCH 4, 2017—Thirty-one 2-year-olds drilled in the first morning of gate works for the freshman class of 2017 on Saturday (Mar 4). Among the headliners in the initial morning of gate drills were a quartet of runners owned and bred by Ed Allred, the all-time leading Quarter Horse breeder.

The first set of babies to work featured a yet to be named colt by Walk Thru Fire and out of the multiple stakes winner Moonlight Corona and a Stel Corona filly named Fiesty.

Trained by James Glenn Jr., the Allred-owned pair looked sharp in their first work with the colt covering the 220 yards from the inside post in the morning’s bullet work of :12.30, while Fiesty covered the distance in a time of :12.50 from the outside.

Blessed with terrific quickness, Moonlight Corona won the Go Josie Go Handicap and Your First Moon Handicap in her racing career and also finished fourth in the 2009 La Primera Del Ano Derby. She’s a half-sister of AQHA champion Your First Moon, which recently earned the AQHA dam of distinction award for her accomplishments as a broodmare.

Moonlight Corona is the mother of Stroller, a Walk Thru Fire colt which ran second in the 2013 Golden State Juvenile Invitational. Meanwhile, Fiesty is a full sister to 2015 AQHA champion aged mare Quirky, a three-time Grade 1 winner, and A Bit Quirky, a 2016 Governor’s Cup Futurity finalist and most recently an allowance winner at Los Alamitos on February 24.

The second set to work on Saturday also featured a pair of Allred-owned and bred runners. The Stel Corona gelding Charter Flight worked 220 yards in :12.5 from the inside post, while New Hot Look worked evenly from the outside post also in :12.5. A gelding by Walk Thru Fire, New Hot Look is a full brother of 2016 Golden State Million Futurity fifth place finisher Renewed and of four-time stakes winner New Look, whose victories include the 2012 El Primero Del Ano Derby. Charter Flight is out of the mare Jetsetter and from the family of Jetsetting Girl, the dam of major stakes runners Gulfstream Five, Bridlewood and Girl Secret.

Another 2-year-old from the family of Jetsetting Girl is Wild Wonder, a colt trained by Charles Treece, which deliver a nice looking :12.5 drill from the outside post on Saturday morning. Sired by Stel Corona, Wild Wonder is out of California Wildfire, whose granddam is the notable blue-hen mare Jetsetting Girl.

California Wildfire has developed into a solid producer and her progeny include Chicanery, a winner of more than $128,000 and a qualifier to the Los Alamitos Super Derby, Golden State Derby, Golden State Million Futurity and Governor’s Cup Futurity and Derby; More Than Wild, a finalist to the 2013 Governor’s Cup Futurity and PCQHRA Breeders Futurity; and Big Time Wild, the fifth place finisher in the 2015 Kindergarten Futurity and qualifier to the Los Alamitos Juvenile Invitational Stakes. C.W. Davidson, Linda Cannon, et al owns Wild Wonder is owned by a partnership that included Cindy Davidson, Linda Cannon, etal.

Many outstanding bloodlines were represented on Saturday morning. Pursue Pappasito, also owned by Allred and trained by Willoughby, is by Pappasito and out of the outstanding Charger Bar Handicap winner Dinastia Toll BRZ. Pursue Pappasito worked 220 yards in :12.6 on Saturday.

Dinastia Toll BRZ is the mother of AQHA champion FDD Dynasty, a millionaire winner of the 2006 Ed Burke Million Futurity and 2007 Governor’s Cup Derby and Go Man Go Handicap. The broodmare also produced Staggering Stride, the fourth-place finisher in this year’s Los Alamitos Winter Derby; Solid Connection, a 2015 Champion of Champions finalist and winner of that year’s Dana Point Handicap and third place finisher in the Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap; and Brazilian Dasher, the third-place finisher in the 2010 La Primera Del Ano Derby and Governor’s Cup Futurity and Derby finalist.

FDD Dynasty is the sire of 2017 World Champion Jessies First Down, AQHA champion Kates Dynasty and multiple Grade 1 winner Far Niente.

Spectacular Fire worked in :13.3, but the colt by Walk Thru Fire is out of Septacular, the mother of AQHA champion Separate Fire, the winner of the Kindergarten and Ed Burke Million Futurity. Spectacular Fire is a full brother to Separate Fire and also Ilikethewayshewalks, winner of the Seal Beach Handicap earlier this year.

S-Quarter K LLC’s Ima Chickie Two, the winner of the 2011-12 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity and Derby and $346,598, is the mother of One Dashing Chick, which worked 220 yards in :12.70 on Saturday. Trained by Jose Flores, One Dashing Chick is a filly by World Champion One Dashing Eagle, winner of the Ed Burke Million, All American Futurity and Golden State Million Futurity.

The John Cooper-trained Hit N Streak looked promising while working for the first time in :12.70 from the inside post. The filly by Hard Hitting is from the family of Make Mine Cash, the winner of the 1982 Faberge Special Effort Futurity at Los Alamitos and 1983 All American Derby. Always Trying, a full sister to four-time stakes winner Nymph, also worked on the first morning of 2-year-old gate workouts at Los Alamitos.

Los Alamitos Race Course will once again offer video of 2-year-old workouts held at the Orange County oval.
