Jess Ravin Is Cool In Starting Gate, Wins Another Stakes Race At Los Alamitos

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—MARCH 18, 2017—EG High Desert Farms’ Jess Ravin picked up her fifth stakes victory at Los Alamitos since May 13 after cruising to a ¾ length win in the $15,000 Corona Kool Handicap here on Saturday night.

Ridden by Jesus Rios Ayala for Yanet Rodriguez, Jess Ravin was third at the start, but she began to motor at the halfway point of the 350-yard dash to fly past her rivals in a time of :17.578.

The 4-year-old Corona Cartel mare has won two stakes races this year. She also won the Flare For Toby Handicap on February 10. Bred by You And Me Partners, Jess Ravin won the La Pacifica Handicap on May 13, Vandy’s Flash Handicap on June 26 and Las Damas Handicap on November 19.

“When she behaves in the gate things tend to go well for this mare,” Ayala said. “It’s a different story when she gets distracted or nervous. That’s when we have problems. We’ve been working with her in the morning in the gate and she’s done well. When she focuses in the gate, she’s a lot of fun to ride.”

Jess Ravin has won eight of 14 career starts. In addition to her five stakes wins, Jess Ravin also ran second in the $227,000 La Primera Del Ano Derby and third in the $203,000 Golden State Derby. Jess Ravin earned $8,250 for her win in the Corona Kool to raise her lifetime earnings to $128,691.

Kirk Goodfellow’s Unfinished Biz, winner of the Animas Stakes at SunRay Park last year, earned $3,375 for finishing second in the Corona Kool. The 4-year-old mare by Captain Courage also finished second when making her Los Alamitos debut in an allowance race on February 24. Chris O’Dell trains Unfinished Biz, which was ridden by Rodolfo Arvizu.

McColee Land and Livestock’s Lady Perry On Fire earned $1,875 for running third. Paul Jones conditions the Walk Thru Fire filly with Ruben Lozano riding.

All Right Now, Apollitical Dasher, Sorelli, Perky and Give Me Sum Sugar completed the field.
