Owned by the Paint Horse Queens of Coweta, Okla. and trained by Dee Keener, PHQ Goodbye Earl was ridden by Jesus Salazar who had to work with the big gelding to score the derby.

"Right before they kicked (the starting gates), he kind of false broke and left awkwardly. I thought it was pretty tight there and then I just got after him. He helped me a lot and ran a really big race. He’s not a quitter, he tries really hard and has a big heart."

The 2-year-old Solid Paint Champion, as awarded by the American Paint Horse Association in 2016, PHQ Goodbye Earl crossed the finish in 17.691 seconds for the 350 yards on a fast track. After his poor start, he rallied to just get past CRM Radio Flyer in the final strides to win by a head. Jess Icy was three-quarters of a length behind the winner in third.

PHQ Goodbye Earl turned the tables on Ivoriona as she defeated him in their trial for the derby on March 10. The pair have developed quite a rivalry competition after their dead-heat for victory in the Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity at Remington Park on June 4, 2016. Since that race, Ivoriona has finished ahead of PHQ Goodbye Earl in three straight races, winning two of them, until losing that streak in their first derby final together.

A Paint gelding by Awesome Chrome from the Judys Lineage mare Sayonora, PHQ Goodbye Earl was bred in Oklahoma by his trainer, Keener. His first derby triumph brought him $17,822, running his career total to $148,202. The derby win is the fifth career victory from 14 career starts for PHQ Goodbye Earl and his fourth career triumph at Remington Park. PHQ Goodbye Earl was at 5-2 odds in the wagering and paid $7.80 to win, $4 to place and $3.60 to show. CRM Radio Flyer paid $17 to place and $8.60 to show. Jess Icy returned $5 to show.

CM Radio is an Oklahoma homebred racing for Dan and Kaye Jones. Matt Whitekiller conditions the Pyc Paint Your Wagon (QH) gelding out Elaina Go Go by Texas Hero. Ridden by Cody Smith, Cm Radio Flyer picked up $5,159.

Jockey Agustin Silva rode Jess Icy to his third place finish for owner Sandra Garnett-Tatom and traine R.L. "Rick" Robinson. The Texas homebred son of Boknaai (QH) is out of Together Again by Title Contender (QH). He eanred $5,159.

The wagering favorite at 4-5 odds was Ivoriona, the 2016 Regularly Registry World Champion Paint. She left the starting gate without her usual rocket-like launch and was never really in contention, a rarity in her stellar career, finishing fourth.

Dtl Batter Up, Tellerimapretygal, Cherry Cobbler, Fanci Flyin, Macario Gold and Bg Fire Em Up completed the field.

The Speedhorse Graham Derby win is the first for all of the connections of PHQ Goodbye Earl.

The 2017 American Quarter Horse Season at Remington Park continues Sunday, March 26 with the first race at 1:30pm.
