Kas Tempting Rolls To Top Mark On First Night of $483,600 Sam Houston Futurity Trials

HOUSTON, TX—APRIL 7, 2017—Kas Tempting, a son of champion/champion sire Tempting Dash broke sharp under jockey Luis Vivanco then drew away to a 2-½ length win to post the top qualifying time on the first of two-nights of trials for the Grade 2 Sam Houston Futurity at Sam Houston Race Park.

The 10 fastest qualifiers, five from each night of trials, will return to the Houston racetrack on Saturday, April 29th to vie for the winner's share of a $483,600 over 330 yards.

Saddle by trainer Jose Sanchez, Kas Tempting races for owners' Francisco Garza and Roberto Laurel. The colt completed the 330-yard task in :16.740 seconds, a 96-speed index into a 9-mph headwind, to record the fastest time.

"Back in January, we worked this colt in company with Blue Eyed Fance (winner of the $271,463 Mardi Gras Futurity at Louisiana Downs), and she beat him by a nose,” said Sanchez. “He’s a stud colt, and we weren’t sure about gelding him, but he has a good mind and with each work, seems to be learning and doing better."

Bred in Texas by Garza, from the Make It Anywhere mare Beaukas, Kas Tempting was a $16,000 repurchase from the Bielau Oaks consignment at the 2016 Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City. The bay colt is a half-brother to TQHA Sires' Cup Derby(RG3) winner Jumpn Beau Chick.

Tempting Dash, who sired two of the five finalists from the first night of trials, is also the sire of champion Kiss My Hocks who kicked off his $1 million-dollar race career in the 2014 Sam Houston Futurity(G2) trials.

Pete Scarmardo's homebred This Is A Deal Too was a 1-½ length winner in the fourth trial for trainer Leon Bard and jockey Francisco Calderon. A $35,000 TQHA Yearling Sale repurchase last summer, the sorrel gelding completed the 330 yards in :16.740 seconds, a 96-speed index, to set the second fastest time.

A son of multiple stakes sire Delagame, This Is A Deal is a brother to 2016 Sam Houston Futurity(G2) runner-up This Is A Deal. His dam, the First Down Dash mare Lady Lilia, is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner and champion sire Desirio. Texas Icon, kicked off the night with a one-length win in the opening trial. Ridden by jockey Cipriano Vidana, Hesa Icon bobbled the start but drew clear to post the third fastest time of :16.768 seconds, also a 96-speed index.

Owned-and-trained by Jose Espinosa, Hesa Icon is a $7,500 TQHA Yearling Sale graduate bred by Jerry Windham. The Texas-bred is the first foal of the placed Stoli mare Stolish, a sister to world champion Stolis Winner and Rainbow Futurity winner Trendi.

Tempting Dash got his second qualifier when Tempting Goinbye, under jockey Damian Martinez, drew away to a 1-½ length win in the ninth trial to get the fourth fastest time of :16.936 seconds.

Bobby Martinez conditions the filly for owner/breeder Narciso Flores. A $27,000 repurchase in the 2016 Heritage Place Yearling Sale, Tempting Goinbye is sibling to Grade 2 winner Hezadashinbye. The stakes winning Dashin Bye mare Goinbye is the dam.

A $7,200 Heritage Place Winter Mixed short-yearling repurchase, Capital Ice won a three-way-shake from Krash N Diamonds and Daddys Blushing to secure the final spot on the first night.

Ridden by Jose Martinez, the Ivory James colt finished second to This Is A Deal Too while recording a :16.984 clocking. Angel Sanchez trains the gelding for owner Jody Garcia. Womack/Cavender Farms bred Capital Ice in Texas from the Mr Eye Opener mare a Fantastic Six. He is a half-brother to Remington Park Juvenile runner-up Days Gone Down.
