OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—APRIL 13, 2017—The $20,720 Paul Harber Memorial Stakes, for Paints and Appaloosas, was the main event on Friday at Remington Park. Star Power Intent, an Appaloosa, pulled the upset to win by three-quarters of a length over fellow Appaloosa, Cant Be Caught.

Owned and trained by Oscar Nunez of Oklahoma City and ridden by Paul Nieto, Star Power Intent pulled away from his rail post position, covering the 350 yards in 17.81 seconds over the fast track. Cant Be Caught gained late to get second while Ivoriona settled for third, another head behind the runner-up.

Dismissed at 9-1 odds in the wagering, Star Power Intent paid $21.20 to win, $8 to place and $3.40 to show. Cant Be Caught paid $4.60 to place and $3 to show. Ivoriona paid $2.80 to show. Dashin JJ was the beaten 8-5 betting favorite, finishing fifth in the field of seven.

A 4-year-old Appaloosa gelding by With Intent from the Power Train (QH) mare Power Buggy (QH), Star Power Intent won for the fifth time in 15 career attempts, and for the fourth time overall at Remington Park. The winner’s share of $11,700 pushes the total earnings for Star Power Intent to $53,049. He was bred in Kansas by Daniel Grotheer.

This was the first win in the Paul Harber Memorial as an owner for Nunez and for jockey Nieto. Nunez actually won the race for the second time as a trainer as he also saddled Power Possum to victory in the Paul Harber Memorial in 2014.

The Paul Harber Memorial is named after a founding member of the American Paint Horse Association who helped guide the organization for over four decades.

The short week of racing will conclude with Saturday night action at Remington Park, underway at 6pm-Central. There will be no live racing on Easter Sunday, April 16.
