LOS ALAMITOS, CA—APRIL 14, 2017—Four races for 2-year-olds were featured on Friday evening at Los Alamitos Race Course with Ron Hartley’s The Revenant and Omar Placencia’s Perfect Az Can Be among the impressive victors on the night.
Owner Ron Hartley and trainer John Cooper, which in recent years have teamed up to race big starts like Moonist and One Famous Eagle, appear to have another talented runner in the form of The Revenant, the winner of the fifth race on Friday.
With leading rider Cesar De Alba aboard, The Revenant finished the 300-yard race with confidence, as he posted a neck win in a time of :15.791. The Revenant is a gelding by Favorite Cartel and out of the Grade 1 winning mare Remember Me Rose, which earned over $800,000 in her racing career. James Markum and Steve Burns bred The Revenant.
Perfect Az Can Be is out of the mare Jess Perfect Girl, the third place finisher of the Grade 3 Yavapai Downs Futurity in 2007. Las Vegas Ranch bred Perfect Az Can Be, which is now the sixth winner from as many starters for Jess Perfect Girl. She's also the mother of current 3-year-old and multiple futurity winner Arizona Icon.
Ridden by Ramon Sanchez for Paul Jones and Lazy Creek Ranch, Fosse was declared the winner after the disqualification of One Dashing Chick in the third race. One Dashing Chick and Fosse battled for the top spot throughout the 300-yard race, but the gray filly One Dashing Chick lugged out and bumped late with Fosse. As a result, One Dashing Chick was disqualified from first and placed second following an inquiry. Fosse, a filly sired by the champion millionaire Foose and out of the AQHA champion aged mare Check N Fetch, covered the 300 yards in 16.14. Paul Jones bred Fosse.
A tip of the cap to leading jockey Vinnie Bednar, who enjoyed his first career win at Santa Anita when he won Thursday's third race. Bednar rode the 12-1 Stately Command to victory for trainer Charles Treece in the six-furlong race for $6,250 claimers. As of this writing, Bednar has won 21 races at Los Alamitos to go along with his first at The Great Race Place. Bednar, who has riding 82nd mount at Santa Anita, has won 255 races in his career.
