AJAX, ONT—JUNE 4, 2017—Making his first start since a fourth-place effort in the Grade 3 $202,000 AQHA Derby Challenge Championship at Los Alamitos Race Course last fall, Country Boy 123 defeated Seis Zoom going away in the last of two trials on Sunday for the Picov Maturity at Ajax Downs.
Ridden by jockey Cory Spataro, Country Boy 123 won by 1 ˝ lengths while clocking the fastest qualifying time of :15.270 seconds, a 106-speed index into an 8-mph headwind on a "good" racing surface.
Trainer Bryn Robertson saddled the son of Champion Country Chicks Man to his seventh career win, in 13 starts, for owner Ruth Barbour. Out of the Dash Thru Traffic mare Very Dashin 123, the Michigan-bred 4-year-old has banked nearly $85,000. Carolyn Bay is the breeder.
Another long-time warrior One Famous Glass got his 15th career win in the first trial Sunday under jockey Tony Phillips. The 7-year-old son of leading sire One Famous Eagle clocked the second fastest time of :15.400, a 102-speed index into an 8-mph crosswind.
Owned by the partnership of Dr. Charles Hall, Jaime and Carol Robertson, One Famous Glass is a multiple stakes winner of $215,848. Second in last year's Picov Maturity, the sorrel gelding is conditioned by trainer Bryn Robertson. Burnett Ranches LLC bred One Famous Glass in Texas from the Royal Quick Dash mare Quick Glass.
Finals for the $50,000-added Picov Maturity will be contested over 300 yards on Sunday, June 18th.
