Crown Pointe Sets Top Mark In Merial Quarter Horse Derby Trials

JEROME, ID—JUNE 4, 2017—Crown Pointe dueled Stellur to a head win in the second of two trials for the Merial Quarter Horse Derby Sunday afternoon at the Jerome County Fair Grounds.

The son of Stel Corona posted the top qualifying time of :17.839 seconds, a 98-speed index into a 5-mph crosswind.

Jockey Dallas Erickson had the riding call aboard Crown Pointe for trainer Guy Weeks. Owned by Scott and Sherry Erickson, Crown Pointe picked up his second consecutive win against no losses this season after winning an Allowance at Pocatello Downs on May 7.

Bred in California by Jones, Burns, Aldstadt and Thompson, the gray gelding is out of Quickie In The Snow by Snowbound (TB). A finalist in last year's Rocky Mountain Spring Classic Futurity, Crown Pointe has earned $4,282.

The aforementioned Stellur, also a gray son of Stel Corona held on to the second fastest time of :17.856, also a 98-speed index. Monty Arrossa saddled the gelding for owner Five Livestock Company LLC.

Paul Jones and Vista Equine Colorado LLC bred Stellur in Colorado from the Wave Carver mare Rw Red Wave. A finalist in the Wild West Futurity at Los Alamitos last season, he has earned $19,799. Uriel Dominguez was up.

Jockey Pedro Gonzalez rode Rumpled Britches to a ¾ length win in the first trial to record the third fastest time of :18.166. Also trained by Arrossa, the daughter of Royaltys Choice is owned by Ed McNelis.

Second in last year's Oneida County Fair Futurity, the brown filly was bred in Idaho by Balgo Racing Team, Inc.

The eight fastest qualifiers from the two trial races today will return to the Jerome County Fair Grounds on Sunday, June 18th to vie for the winner's purse in the 350-yard final.
