Kowboy Jim Steps Up In Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby Trials

SHAKOPEE, MN—JULY 2, 2017—Racing for owner-trainer Dean Frey, Kowboy Jim stepped up off an option claiming victory on June 8th to roll to a 1-¾ length win on Sunday while setting the fastest qualifying time for the Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby at Canterbury Park.

The 10 fastest qualifiers, from three trial races, will return to the Minnesota racetrack on Sunday, July 16th to vie for the winner's share of an $81,125 purse going 400 yards.

Ridden by jockey Berkley Packer, Kowboy Jim was much the best as he broke on top and cruised to the top qualifying time of :19.786 seconds, a 105 speed index with a 14 mph tailwind.

The homebred son of world champion sire FDD Dynasty was bred in California by owner-trainer Frey from the Mr Jess Perry mare Counting On You. He has compiled an (8) 4-1-1 record and earned $33,669. The Canterbury Park Quarter Derby will be the bay gelding's first stakes appearance.

Coming off a win in the Gopher State Derby on June 10th, La Mos Pyc kept her 2017 record a perfect 3-for-3 by defeating Tinys Courage by half-a-length in the last trial to get the second fastest qualifying time. Lori Harris conditions the daughter of leading sire Pyc Paint Your Wagon for owner Thomas Scheckel.

Oscar Rohne bred the stakes winning filly in Oklahoma from the Heza Fast Dash mare La Mos Chingono. Ridden by jockey Stormy Smith, La Mos Pyc completed the 400 yards in :19.899 seconds, a 102 speed index, with a 12 mph tailwind. The six-time winner has earned $45,195.

This year's Jack Books Stakes winner Bout Tree Fiddy posted the third fastest time of :19.944 seconds, a 101 speed index, by defeating Pyc Jess Bite Mydust by a head in the second trial.

Tomey Swan trains the multiple stakes winning Ivory James gelding for owners' Patrick Swan and Carry Allred. The Oklahoma homebred is out of Hollie Jollie by Fredricksburg. Marcus Swionotek rode the six-time winning earner of ore than $120,000.
