Fastest Qualifier Bs Special Returns To Win Minnesota Stallion Breeders' Quarter Horse Futurity

SHAKOPEE, MN—JULY 2, 2017—Fastest qualifier Bs Special returned to Canterbury Park on Sunday to defeat Triple Vodka Feature by one-length in the $45,765 Minnesota Stallion Breeders' Quarter Horse Futurity. Second fastest qualifier Itinkican Itinkican finished another length back in third place.

Under jockey David Pinon, Bs Special rolled over the 350 yards in :17.908 seconds to earn a 95 speed index with a 12 mph tailwind. Trainer Casey Black saddled the daughter of leading third crop sire Freighttrain B for owner Duane Murphy.

Black was cautiously confident going into the race with the fastest qualifier from trials held two weeks prior, but as any veteran trainer knows, the race must still be run and anything can happen.

"That’s about all there is to it," Black said. "Have good clients and good horses."

Bred is Missouri by Barley & Sharp Farm, the brown filly kicked off her career with a maiden win in her first start at Remington Park last April She has compiled a (6) 3-1-0 record and used the $20,696 Breeders' purse to bring her bankroll total to $38.285. She returned $3.80 to win.

BS Special finished one length ahead of Triple Vodka Feature who led briefly before yielding to the winner.

Still a maiden from three starts, Triple Vodka Feature races for owner Summer Run, Inc. and was bred in Texas by Renee Spiller. Nik Goodwin rode the daughter of second crop sire Triple Vodka from the Feature Mr Jess mare Ms Dashing Feature. She earned $9,255 for the effort.

Itinkican Itinkican, also a daughter of multiple stakes sire Freighttrain B races for owner/breeder Summer Run Inc. Olmstead trains with Bryan Velazquez getting the riding call on the Minnesota-bred from the Oak Tree Special mare Moonlight Masquerade. Itinkican Itinkican picked up $4,678 for third.

Completing the field were Eos Marie Laveau, Sweet Twisted Tea, Ima Lil Storm Cat, Eos Bea Mine and Bodacious Peach. Calamady Jane and High On Chablis were both scratched.

Canterbury Park’s 67-day live mixed-breed meet runs May 5 through Sept. 16. The quarter horse season begins May 27 and runs through the Minnesota Festival of Champions Aug. 20. Additional information is available at canterburypark.com.
