Brookside Victorious Against Open Company in the King William Handicap at Retama

SELMA, TX—JULY 8, 2017—The only two fillies in the $20,000 King William Handicap defeated the boys by a neck in the feature race at Retama Park on Saturday. Only a head separated winning 4-year-old filly Brookside from runner-up Zenergetic as she and Juan Vazquez covered the 350-yard distance in 17.565 to earn a 104 speed index.

A homebred for Linda Loftis Tobias, Brookside is by Brookstone Bay and is out of I Fly American by American Champ. The Leon Bard trainee has won two of her three starts this year and is six for 11 lifetime, with earnings of over $50,000.

As a 3-year-old, Brookside unsuccessfully attempted to qualify for the Adequan Derby Challenge Championship through regional qualifiers at Retama and Sam Houston. Now 4, the filly has already won the Merial Sam Houston Distaff Challenge and earned a berth to the Distaff Challenge Championship later this year at Prairie Meadows.

Finishing a head behind the winner and just a neck in front of the boys was another 4-year-old Texas-bred filly, Zenergetic. Trained by Brian Stroud for owner Zenergetic Group, the daughter of Dominyun led throughout the race until she was caught at the wire by Brookside.

Zenergetic was bred by Bobby Cox, out of the First Down Dash mare Zenergy. Juan Francisco Garcia, Jr. had the call for the King William.

Cobalt Creek and Omar Reyes closed fast on the outside but could not catch the front-running pair in time. The 5-year-old Missouri-bred is trained by John Stinebaugh for owner Vwp Jr, Inc. He was bred by Jim Streelman and Bill Dale, by Walk Thru Fire, out of the Check Him Out mare Checknbac.

Cobalt Creek still seeks his first stakes victory, though he has started in a dozen stakes to date. His impressive resume includes running in the 2014 Ruidoso and All American Juveniles, qualifying to the 2015 Ruidoso Derby (G1) and Rainbow Derby (G1), and competing in the 2016 Leo Stakes (G1) and Remington Park Invitational Championship (G1). He has amassed earnings of over $200,000 in his 25 lifetime starts.

Completing the field were A Kool Secret, Mighty Corona Jr, Quic Carter, Wishing Rock and Boxin Bok.
