Bay Max Breaks Maiden, Springs the Upset in Utah-Bred Futurity

Bay Max Breaks Maiden, Springs the Upset in Utah-Bred Futurity

EVANSTON, WY—JULY 15, 2017—The best of the Beehive State was on display in the $34,800 Utah-Bred Futurity at Wyoming Downs on Saturday, but it was Bay Max and jockey Jose Guzman who pulled the upset to win the final. Bay Max ($18.40) and Guzman led from start to finish to win the 350-yard race in 17.741.

Bay Max, who sat at 20-1 on the morning line, made just his second lifetime start after debuting in the trials for Saturday’s final on July 1. The gelding finished third in his trial, making his victory in the Futurity final also his first career win.

Bay Max is a homebred for Casey Woolstenhulme and is trained by Ryan F. Christensen. He is by Dashair, out of the Thoroughbred mare Weekend Traffic, by Olympio.

A pair of Winners Version geldings completed the trifecta, as third-fastest qualifier Letsgetitonmarvin made a strong closing move to gain second place. Letsgetitonmarvin is trained by last year’s leading trainer at Wyoming Downs, Chancey Spencer, for owner Allan Gurney. Uriel Dominguez had the call.

Letsgetitonmarvin was bred by A & C Racing and Roping, out of the Dash for Cash mare Dashin Amy Jo. Dashin Amy Jo is out of the multiple stakes winning mare and All American Futurity qualifier Amy Jo Mito.

In third by a neck was the second-fastest qualifier, Lt Heza Winner. Ridden by last year’s leading rider at Wyoming Downs, Oscar Cervantes, Lt Heza Winner is trained by Diana Garfias for Aron Saenz. The Winners Version gelding is out of Nurturist, by Separatist. He was bred in Utah by Tom Peterson.

Completing the field in the Utah-Bred Futurity were Dash Off to Jump, Sb Itty Bitty, Cranky T and Jerrys Knud Runner. Jaggersfadedblujeans, Miss Five Bar Maid and Pour Me a Corona were scratched.
