Born To B Bad Draws Off In Speedhorse Derby Trials

TULSA, OK—JULY 15, 2017—Born To B Bad, under jockey Jose Romero, drew off to a three-quarter length win over Famousist in the first of three trials Saturday at Fair Meadows to set the fastest qualifying time for the Speedhorse Derby.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to the Northeastern Oklahoma racetrack on Saturday, July 29th to vie for the winners' share of a $66,600 purse going 350 yards.

Trainer Tammy Kay Johnson saddled Born To B Bad to his fifth career win for owners Melissa Slayton and Cody Bowling. The son of multiple stakes sire Freighttrain B completed the 350 yards in :17.310 seconds, a 103 speed index, to set the top qualifying mark.

The Texas-homebred entered the trials off a third-place effort in the Ruidoso Derby Challenge on July 1st at Ruidoso Downs. Second in the AQHA Juvenile Challenge Championship(G2) last fall at Los Alamitos Race Course, Born To B Bad has compiled a (13) 5-2-2 record and banked over $101,000.

Slayton and N.R. Stevenson bred the bay gelding from the Separatist mare Dosvedanya.

Graded-placed Famousist held on to the second fastest time of :17.416 seconds a 99 speed index. Jockey Mario Delgado rode the Separatist gelding for owners Denis and Julie Schoenhofer.

Jose Gamez trains the bay California-bred from the First Down Dash mare Ought To Be Famous. With a (10) 3-2-3 record, Famousist was second in the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park in March. He has earned $63,738. Steve D. Burns, DVM is the breeder.

Stacy Charette-Hill saddled Damn Strait to a two-length win in the second trial for owner M.C. Stucks. Jorge Torres had the riding call on the Bobby D. Cox Texas-bred son of Dominyun from the Jody O Toole mare Hottesticketintown. Third in last year's Grade 3 Speedhorse Futurity, Damn Strait completed the 350 yards in :17.433 seconds, also a 99 speed index, to post the third fastest time. He has earned $73,730.

Multiple Grade 1 sire Dominyun sired four of the 10 qualifiers. Freighttrain B had two.
