Walter Merrick Memorial Ends In Dead-Heat, Catch Jessie If Ucan Wins G1 Spots And Dots

TULSA, OK—JULY 28, 2017—Blazin Panther and Admiral Zoomwalt ended in a dead-heat in the $17,500 Walter Merrick Memorial Stakes Friday night at Fair Meadows in Tulsa. Droppin Timber was a neck back in the blanket finish to finish third.

Ridden by jockey James Flores, Admiral Zoomwalt vied for the lead two-wide and led late as Blazen Panther and jockey Daniel Torres closed fast to get the dead-heat. The pair were timed in :46.479 seconds into a 10-mph cross-wind to share the winners and runner-up purses worth $6,964 each.

Owned-and-trained by Luz Chavira , Blazen Panther is by Panther Mountain form the Blazen Bryan mare Blazen Madie. The 6-year-old gelding has compiled a (31) 7-10-3 record and banked $113,958. B. Cockrell and L. Vanhoozer bred the bay in Oklahoma.

Coming off a win in the Expo Square Stakes last month at Fair Meadows, Admiral Zoomwalt races for owner Rogelio Marquez, Jr. and trainer John Weghorst. Bred by Mike Nobles and Christine Hudson the 5-year-old Shazoom gelding is out of Tellin It All by First Down Dash. Admiral Zoomwalt has a (28) 11-3-3 record and has earned $148,415.

Multiple stakes-winner Droppin Timber picked up $1,915 for third. Trainer Orrin Cogburn saddled the son of First Timber for owner Frank Greenshaw. Danny Caldwell bred the 7-year-old in Oklahoma from the Strawfly Special mare Droppindead Gorgeous. Curtis Kimes was aboard the $189,668 earner.

Catch Jessie If Ucan Wins Grade 1 Spots And Dots Stakes

In the Fair Meadows undercard 4-year-old Appaloosa Catch Jessie If U Can rolled to a 4 ¼ length win over Sueno Pinto in the $14,100 Spots and Dots Dash. Jungle Chick finished one-length back in third.

Orrin Gogburn saddled the chestnut daughter of Jess Shake Em Up out of Catch If Catch Can by Heza Fast Man. The $7,338 winners' purse boosted Catch Jessie If Ucan's earnings to $23,248.

The Robert Patton owned the Texas-bred completed the 870 yards in :46.394 seconds, a 90-speed index into a 10-mph crosswind. Glen Wilkinson is the breeder and Curtis Kimes had the riding assignment.

Countin Quick Cash was fourth followed by Sturgis, Slim Chickens, Chewchews Quick and In The Lane To Fame.
