SELMA, TX—SEPTEMBER 1, 2017—At 11-1 odds Famous Strawberry was a neck winner over Volcoms Jess in the $39,800 G.C.F.A. Maiden Classic contested on Friday night at Retama Park.

The San Antonio area racetrack agreed to card the Quarter Horse race on their Thoroughbred card tonight after it was cancelled last Sunday due Tropical Storm Harvey hitting the Gillespie County Fairgrounds in Fredricksburg, Texas.

Tomorrow night Retama Park will host the Gillespie County Fair Futurity and Juvenile.

Ridden by jockey Jesse Lee Levario, Famous Strawberry broke her maiden while completing the 350 yards in :17.794 seconds, a 97-speed index into an 8 mph headwind.

Trainer Josue Ponce saddled the 5-year-old mare for owner Carlos Ponce. Bred in Texas by Burnett Ranches LLC, the daughter of leading sire One Famous Eagle is out of the Corona Cartel mare Strawberry Cartel.

Famous Strawberry has compiled a (17) 1-1-1 record and the $13,930 winners' purse boosted her career mark to $16,043. The royally bred mare's second dam is champion and All American Futurity(G1) winner Strawberry Silk by *Beduino (TB).

Bumped at the start, Volcoms Jess picked up $5,970 owner Aliver Guevara and trainer Fernando Chavez. Luis Vivanco rode the Volcom 5-year-old out of Jess A Topper by Mr Jess Perry. The partnership of Adams and Cradduck Running Hoses is the breeder.

A Treis Of Razz earned $3,980 for finishing third. Jorge Muniz saddled the Tres Seis gelding for owner Guerras Racing Stables. Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches LP bred the 3-year-old ridden by Luis Ruiz. A Treis Of Razz is out of the Special Leader mare Razzabedazz.

Famous Strawberry rewarded backers with $21.40 to win, $9.60 to place and $4.80 to win.

Streakin Past You, Eye Flyin, Global Menace, Woodall, Ourglasse, The Real Deel and Rm Firstzest completed the field.
