ROCK SPRINGS, WY—SEPTEMBER 2, 2017—Seeking a fourth straight win that includes races in three states, Movin the Doe left no questions unanswered and paid the public as the post-time favorite ($4.20) in the $28,250 Western States Breeders' Derby at Sweetwater Downs on Saturday afternoon.
Movin the Doe began his streak at Sandy Downs, winning both his trial and the final for the Bitterroot Derby, then moved to Colorado to take down the Arapahoe Park Derby. The gelding is five for six in 2017 and has over $95,000 in lifetime earnings.
Jockey Jesus Osuna made it look as though he was along for the ride, winning easily by 1 ½ lengths. Final time for the 400-yard race was 19.411, earning the gelding a 108 speed index.
Movin the Doe is trained by Luis Gonzalez, owned by Luis Gonzales, and was bred in Utah by Steve Berry. He is by Maknmoves and is out of Bundle Doe, by Hennessy.
Last year, he was second in the Western States Breeders Futurity before embarking on a Turf Paradise campaign that included multiple trial and stakes appearances.
It was a race for second place for the rest of the field, and Apollitical Winga emerged from the pack by a head for place money. Apollitical Winga is an Apollitical Jess filly, bred in Wyoming by J Bar 7 Ranch LLC. She is out of the Tres Seis mare Wingalicious. Jesse Villegas trains for owner Pedro Mena.
Apollitical Winga is a lightly raced filly with eight lifetime starts, all but one of which were in 2017. She has three wins to her name to date, including a victory in an allowance race at Los Alamitos in April.
Heza Lacey J Jr finished in third place with Jesus Valenzuela up for trainer Riley Moosman. The Carters Cartel gelding is owned by Sam Allie and was bred by Sam Allie, Jr. in Utah, out of the Streakin La Jolla mare Lacey Jn Me.
Completing the field were Too Long Kissin, Making Hot Wheels, Musical Jess, One Sweet Fool and La Reina Del Rancho. Moonlight Rendezvouz and Red Crick Cowboy were scratched.
