SELMA, TX—EPTEMBER 2, 2017— The second-longest shot on the board, Down N Cruzin ($27.00) won the $20,000 Gillespie County Fair Futurity Juvenile at Retama Park on Saturday night.

The Juvenile, as well as the $173,700 Gillespie County Fair Futurity, were rescheduled and relocated to Retama from Gillespie County Fair in Fredericksburg after weather cancellations related to Hurricane Harvey.

Down N Cruzin is trained by Saul Ramirez, Jr. for owner Cruz Nava. He won his trial for the Gillespie County Fair Futurity and qualified for the TQHA Sires' Cup Futurity (G3) earlier this summer at Retama.

The Down N Dash gelding stuck a neck out in front at the wire in a blanket finish with Eddie Sanchez aboard. The winning duo posted a final time of 17.706 in 350 yards and earned a 99 speed index.

Down N Cruzin was bred in Texas by Twin Spires Farm, out of Cruzin Apollo, by Apollo.

After running in trials for three stakes, First Lady Eleanor appeared in her first stakes race and finished second in the Gillespie Juvenile, a head in front of Ss Ontimearrival. The Texas-bred filly was ridden by Rodolfo Fierro for trainer Yasmine Fierro.

First Lady Eleanor is a homebred for Sarah Leddy, by Streakin Sixes, out of Third Copies Yours, by Royal Always.

In third, a head in front of post-time favorite Pirates Code, was Ss Ontimearrival and jockey Jose Martinez. The Gillespie Juvenile was also this Texas-bred filly’s first stakes entry and she has not finished off the board in her last six starts.

Ss Ontimearrival is trained by Santiago Riojas, Jr., owned by Jesus E. Longoria, and was bred by Ronnie Stewart and Carolyn Mayhew. She is by Rock Solid Jess, out of the Apollo mare Yeshuwah.

Completing the field were Pirates Code, Glimpse of Fire, Z Captain, Louisiana Seis and Lotharrio. Louisiana Silk and Thecartelofmiracle were scratched.
