Spooftrain 7 Finishes on Top of Owner-Trainer Exacta in Future of Iowa Stakes

ALTOONA, IA—OCTOBER 13, 2017— Trainer Tony Jones and owner Richard Tobin completed the winning exacta in the $60,000 Future of Iowa Stakes at Prairie Meadows, though it was Spooftrain 7 ($15.00) who was the upset winner over stablemate and heavy favorite Island Gurl.

Spooftrain 7 was bred in Iowa by Williams Fertilizer LLC, by Freighttrain B and out of Finely Tuned Chivato, by Dash to Chivato. The 4-year-old filly had won her previous two starts before Friday’s race, and she is now 5 for 14 lifetime with $68,539 in career earnings.

Raul Gutierrez was aboard Spooftrain 7 for Friday night’s race, the first of four stakes on the penultimate day of the 2017 Quarter Horse meet. After breaking on top, Gutierrez and Spooftrain 7 maintained a clear lead on the inside to win by a half-length.

Final time for the 350-yard race was 17.548. The winning pair earned a 96 speed index.

The people’s choice for the race was Island Gurl, who was undefeated in her last four starts, including a win via disqualification in her last start. The Pappasito filly has lifetime earnings in excess of $63,000, surpassing most of the field in the state-bred event for fillies and mares.

Island Gurl is a 4-year-old filly bred by Sheri Lynn Andrew, out of Streaking Out, by Heza Fast Man. Jorge Torres was aboard for her start in the Future of Iowa, her first stakes appearance. Jorge Torres, second-leading rider of the current Prairie Meadows, had the call for trainer Tony Jones and owner Richard Tobin.

Trainer Charlton Hunt and owner Larry Bain teamed up for the third-place finish with Miss Alice Grace, with Cristian Esqueda aboard. The 3-year-old filly by Jess Racy was third in the $68,472 Iowa Stallion Derby two starts back.Bain also bred Miss Alice Grace, out of the Chicks Beduino mare Beduinos Heart.

Completing the field were My Girls Toasted, Shesa Vivian, Storming Red Chickie and Justa Minyun.
