Born To B Bad Wins Altoona Derby in First of Nine Races on Prairie Meadows Closing Night

ALTOONA, IA—OCTOBER 14, 2017— The final night of the 2017 Quarter Horse meet at Prairie Meadows went out in style with nine races in total, including the Challenge Championships and four of the biggest open races of the meet.

Born to B Bad kicked off the night by winning the first stakes race on the card Saturday night, the $145,604 Altoona Derby. The Freighttrain B gelding, with Benito Baca aboard, broke second, stumbled, and dueled with second place finisher Attack the Wind before edging ahead by a head at the wire over a sealed track. Final time for the race was 19.779, and the winning duo earned a 92 speed index in the 400-yard open event for 3-year-olds.

Tammy Johnson trains for owners Melissa Slayton and Cody Bowling. Slayton also bred Born to B Bad, with N. R. Stevenson, in Texas, out of the Separatist mare Dosvedanya.

Born to B Bad ($4.60) was the tenth-fastest qualifier from trials held on September 29, but went off as the post-time favorite.

As a 2-year old, Born to B Bad won the Ruidoso Juvenile Challenge (G3) and finished second in the AQHA Juvenile Challenge Championship (G2) at Los Alamitos. With multiple stakes appearances and eight wins in his 17 lifetime starts, he has now won $189,221 in his career.

Attack the Wind and Cesar Gomez led early but were caught at the wire. The California-bred son of Walk Thru Fire is trained by Julio Corral for owner Cesar Nunez. He was bred by Steve Burns, DVM, out of Attack the Cartel, by Corona Cartel.

Attack the Win was the fifth-fastest qualifier to the Altoona Derby, and has also qualified for the Prairie Meadows Derby Challenge and West Texas Derby (G3). As a 2-year-old, he won the Golden State Juvenile Stakes at Los Alamitos.

At over 33-1, third-place finisher Corona Springs was the longest-shot on the board, but relied on her breeding and backclass to get up for third from the middle of the track. Jason Olmstead trains the daughter of Corona Cartel for owner Thomas Scheckel. Brayan Velazquez had the call Saturday night.

The Utah-bred filly is out the First Down Dash mare Aquafina, a multiple stakes-placed full sister to Ocean Runaway and Wave Carver. She was bred in Utah by McColee Land & Livestock

Completing the field were Quick Dashin Perry, In Kuh Hoots, Mary Paintyourwagon, Bv King George, La Mos Pyc and Bush Hero. Fastest qualifier Dauns First Desirio was scratched in appear in the AQHA Adequan Derby Challenge Championship later on the card.
