HOBBS, NM—OCTOBER 29, 2017—Under jockey Felipe Garcia-Luna, 20-to-1 shot Yudes Jess Dashin rallied to defeat Princess Jessie Jane by half-a-length in the $219,817 New Mexico Cup Quarter Horse Derby(RG2) at Zia Park Sunday.

Posttime favorite and fastest qualifier Magnifico Dragon gave way late and finished in a dead-heat for third with Cartels Star Daddy.

Conditioned by trainer Michael Jointer, Yudes Jess Dashin completed the 440 yards in :22.196 seconds into an 8-mph headwind. It was the biggest career win ever for the Jess A Chicks gelding who banked $105,512 for his effort.

Justin Joiner and Scott Bryant own the sorrel gelding from the Dash Easy mare Baby Doll Dash. He has compiled an (8) 3-2-0 record and banked $121,374. Bred by Mike Abraham, Yules Jess Dashin was also a finalist in the RG2 Zia Derby at Ruidoso Downs over the summer.

Runner-up Princess Jessie Jane pocketed $37,400 for finishing second. Jose Luis Muela trains the Jesse James Jr filly for owner Daniel Nunez. Bred by J.H. and A.D. Erickson, Princess Jessie Jane was ridden by Jose Luis Enriquez. She is out of the Heza Motor Scooter mare A Scootin Princess.

Magnifico Dragon and Cartels Star Daddy shared $16,486 each for third.

A multiple graded winner of more than $317,300, Magnifico Dragon races for owner Daniel Balderrama and trainer Cynthia Nixon. Mauro Salcedo rode the Zula Dragon gelding out of Cassies Mag by Magnificence. Heriberto Moreno is the breeder.

Cartels Star Daddy is a homebred for Jimmy Negrete, who co-owns the Big Daddy Cartel gelding with Angela Vasquez. Juan Gonzalez conditions with Tanner Thedford riding. He is out of the Dash To Chivato mare Chivato Star.

Kama Strawfly, Mitey Man, Flash Em The Jewels, Roanoka Fast Cat, Mr Klee and Attitude Project completed the field. La Riena Del Sur was scratched.
