LOS ALAMITOS, CA—APRIL 8, 2018—The first two races for the 2-year-old class of 2018 at Los Alamitos have resulted in two impressive wins for Reliance Ranches and trainer Mike Robbins thanks to a pair of talented fillies.
The owner and trainer won the meet’s first race for juveniles on Saturday night when Conquering Marie won her 300 yard debut by daylight.
It was a similar result on Sunday evening after SC Coronada, who had been working alongside Conquering Marie in the mornings here, posted an impressive wire-to-wire 1 ¾ length victory in her first outing.
With Jesus Rios Ayala aboard from post number one, the the filly covered the 300 yards in :15.532.
Both Conquering Marie and SC Coronada are by leading first-crop sire Coronado Cartel, a multiple stakes winning son of leading sire Corona Cartel from the Grade 1 winning and producing Mr Jess Perry mare First Carolina.
"The filly I ran last night, Conquering Marie, and this filly tonight I have working them together and they have been working head up every time," Robbins said. "They’re both really nice fillies. (SC Coronada) acts a little greenly in the barn and she likes to raise a little bit of hell in the paddock, but when you stick her in the gate she’s all business. I don’t think either one of them will have any trouble going a longer distance. At either 350 or 400 yards, the distance won’t bother them."
Bred in Oklahoma SC Coronada is out of the champion aged mare Spit Curl Diva, a multiple graded stakes winner of $829,353 in her career. Spit Curl Diva was a 12-time stakes winner in her career with her top wins being the Grade 1 Refrigerator Handicap and Grade 1 AQHA Distaff Challenge in 2010.
Spit Curl Diva is the dam of multiple stakes winners SC Vapor Trail (by Corona Cartel) and Stevie B First Cash (by First Down Dash). SC Vapor Trail won the John Deere California Juvenile and qualified to the Ed Burke Million Futurity here last year, while Stevie B First Cash won the Town Policy Handicap and First Down Dash Handicap at Los Alamitos and is a multiple Grade 1 stakes placed runner.
Jimmy and Marilyn Harrel’s Thrillofbeingfirst, a filly by champion sire First Mooonflash, finished second and covered the distance in :15.822.
Whatever He Wants, Chickafoose, Strong Lyke Bull, Volcomsgold Bars, and Cartels High completed the field.
