Five Bar Cartel Filly Top Qualifier In Pot O'Gold Futurity Trials

KENNEWICK, WA—APRIL 22, 2018—In her first career start, Ladys A Cartel burst out of the gate in a wire-to-wire win on Sunday to set the fastest qualifying time for the $35,000-est. Pot O'Gold Futurity at Sun Downs.

The 10 fastest qualifiers, from six trial races, will return to the Pacific Northwest racetrack on Sunday, May 6th to vie for the winner's share of a $10,000-added purse going 300 yards.

Saddled by trainer Danny Montes, Ladys A Cartel rallied from the gate then pulled away from the field by 1-¾ lengths while clocking the 300 yards in a quick :15.572 seconds. She earned a 99 speed index and the top qualifying spot.

Owned by Jorge Carmona, the sorrel filly, by leading first-crop sire Five Bar Cartel, was bred in California from the Relagate (TB) mare Significant Lady, a stakes producing sister to stakes winner So Significant and half-sister to AQHA Racing Champion Significant Heart. A Regal C-hoice Inc. is the breeder.

Washington homebred Jesstafiably Jess was nose winner over Estelline in the fourth trial to get the second fastest time of :15.724 seconds, a 94 speed index.

Trainer Benito Curiel saddled the One Sweet Jess colt for owner/breeder Malon Cowgill. The 2-year-old colt, from the Strawfly Special mare Fly Thru Time, was also making his career debut in the trials.

Estelline, a daughter of Grade 1 sire Carters Cartel, held on for the third fastest time of :17.729 seconds, also a 94 speed index. An Oregon homebred for Hayden Brothers Ranch, Estelline is out of the Favorite Trick (TB) mare Lady Of Reason Sa. Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa had the riding call for trainer Hector Magallanes.

Magallanes saddled three additional qualifiers—5th fastest Willy B Gone; 8th fastest L Bar D Top Prospect and 9th fastest Arizona Favorite.

Bill Holburg was the only other trainer with multiple qualifiers, getting 4th fastest Guys Storm Cloud and 7th fastest Lucky Ned.
