Notes From This Week’s Quarter Horse Gate Works at Los Alamitos Race Course

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—APRIL 22, 2018—This year’s talented class of 2-year-old Quarter Horses continue to post gate works at Los Alamitos Race Course in preparation for the major futurities that are in the horizon at the Orange County track. Here’s a brief rundown at some of the top young runners that have shined during recent mornings at Los Alamitos.

SATURDAY, APRIL 21

Jess Macho Corona (Oklahoma-bred colt by Corona Cartel out of Jess Send Me) worked evenly from the inside post with Kobe Moon when both posted :12.2 drills. His dam is Jess Send Me, a winner of $361,595 and the runner-up to Ochoa in the Grade 1 All American Futurity in 2011.

Kobe Moon (New Mexico-bred filly by FDD Dynasty out of Osaka Moon) worked evenly from the outside post with Jess Macho Corona with both posted :12.2 drills. Her dam earned $86,486 while winning the Gwendolyn Eaves Stakes and running second in the New Mexico Classic Futurity in 2013. Kobe Moon’s granddam is Dash Ta Moon, a four-time stakes winner of more than $350,000. Dash Ta Moon won the Ruidoso Quarter Horse Sale Futurity in 2005.

Wreckin Ball (California-bred colt by One Dashing Eagle out of Home Wreckers Fire) easily won his work when posting a :12.2 drill. His dam produced 2014 Grade 2 Kindergarten Futurity third place finisher Pink Berreta. Wreckin Ball’s granddam is Jess Delightful, a winner of over $82,000 and winner of the West Texas Juvenile Invitational and fourth place finisher in the Grade 1 Rainbow Futurity in 2003.

Checkhimoutntheocean (California-bred by Tempted By The Ocean out of Keepyourpantson) worked evenly with Jolly Wompis when posting a :12.3 drill. Female family traces back to Beat Your Pants Off, the dam of AQHA champions and Grade 1 winners Splash Bac and Jumping Tac Flash. The stallion Tempted By The Ocean never raced. He’s a half-brother of AQHA champion and noted stallion Tempting Dash.

Majestic Mr Perry (California-bred by Mr Jess Perry out of Personal Glory) worked :12.3 in winning drill from the outside post. Dam won three races and earned $172,554. Personal Glory finished third in the Ed Burke Million Futurity in 2010. She also won her trials to the Kindergarten and Ed Burke Million Futurity and Governor’s Cup Derby. Granddam is Suzy Cartel, a winner of $100,000 and third place finisher in the Grade 1 Kindergarten Futurity in 2002.

THURSDAY, APRIL 19

Las Dos Coronas (California-bred filly by Corona Cartel out of Jessica Ravin) worked evenly from the outside post with Gallant Fire Walk in a time of :12.5. Las Dos Coronas is a full sister to graded stakes winners Jess Cuervo and Jess Ravin. Jess Cuervo earned nearly $300,000 and qualified to the All American Futurity and Rainbow Futurity in 2011. Jess Ravin earned over $180,000 while winning six stakes races at Los Alamitos. She won the Grade 3 Las Damas Handicap and Grade 3 Miss Princess Handicap. Las Dos Coronas’ dam, Jessica Ravin, was second in the Grade 3 New Mexico Derby Challenge in 2004.

Gallant Fire Walk (California-bred gelding by Walk Thru Fire out of Callan Rocks) worked evenly from the inside post with Las Dos Coronas when posting a time of :12.5. He’s a full-brother to millionaire Worth Doing, the winner of the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, runner-up in the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity, and third place finisher in the Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity in 2016. Callan Rocks won over $50,000 in her racing career and qualified to the Grade 1 All American Derby in 2010.

Taz Tiny Pebble (California-bred filly by Parsons Rock out of Tiny Taz) had winning drill when working :12.3 from the outside post. Her dam won three races at Los Alamitos including her trial to the 2013 La Primera Del Ano Derby. She finished sixth in the Grade 2 La Primera.

Perrys Pleasure (California-bred filly by Mr Jess Perry out of This Boogie Fires) won her drill easily from the inside post in a time of :12.4. She’s a half-sister to 2017 AQHA champion 2-year-old and champion 2-year-old filly J Fire Up, who earned $1,430,411 last year. The mare This Boogie Fires finished third in the Grade 1 Kindergarten Futurity in 2011.

TUESDAY, APRIL 17

Separatefromothers (Utah-bred gelding by Corona Cartel out of Separate Fire) worked evenly with Corona By Corona when posting a :12.2 clocking from inside post. Dam was the nation’s fifth leading earner in 2011 while winning five of eight starts on the way to being named the AQHA champion 2-year-old filly. She won the Grade 1 Kindergarten Futurity and Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity.

Corona By Corona (Utah-bred gelding by Corona Cartel out of Louisiana Corona) worked evenly with Separatefromothers when drilling in :12.2 from outside post. His dam made only two career starts with her final outing coming in a trial to the All American Futurity in 2011.

Delayed Steal (California-bred gelding by Stel Corona out of Hot To Hit) won the work from the inside post in :12.3 as part of a three-horse set. His dam was unraced in her career. His granddam is the outstanding broodmare Chickasis, the dam of multiple graded stakes winners Hot Hitter ($503,127) and Hard Hitting ($358,923).

Santa Monica MV (Texas-bred filly by Corona Cartel out of Jess Significant) won her drill easily when posting a :12.3 from the outside post. She’s a full-sister to 2014 AQHA champion aged mare and multiple graded stakes winner Significant Heart, the winner of the Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap in 2014 and Grade 3 PCQHRA Breeders Derby in 2012. The mare Jess Significant earned $419,635 while winning the Grade 1 Ruidoso Futurity and running fifth in the Grade 1 All American Futurity versus Stolis Winner and Jet Black Patriot in 2008.

Bartiromo (California-bred filly by Walk Thru Fire out of Babe On The Fly) won her drill when covering the distance in :12.5 from the outside post. Her dam is a top producer with a progeny that includes Little Talks, winner of the Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity in 2015, Rock You, winner of the Grade 1 All American Gold Cup in 2015, and Fly Thru The Fire, winner of his Ruidoso Futurity trial and All American Futurity trial in 2013. Babe On The Fly was a standout runner as well, earning $246,111 in her career while running second to Hawkish in the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity and second to Be A Bono in the Golden State Futurity in 2003.

Hold On Jessie (Oklahoma-bred filly by Mr Jess Perry and out of Hold Me Now) won her work :12.6 to :12.7 from the outside post. She’s a full-sister to 2013 AQHA champion 3-year-old filly and multiple graded stakes winner Matabari, who earned $1.4 million while winning the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity in 2012, Grade 1 Los Alamitos Super Derby in 2013, and Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Championship in 2015. The mare Hold Me Now won seven races, including the Matron Stakes in 2007, on the way to earning $109,005.
