Dashair Special Posts Fastest Qualifying Time in Pocatello Downs Maiden Frolic Trials

POCATELLO, ID—MAY 13, 2018—A maiden no more, Dashair Special won the second of three trials for the $7,500-added Pocatello Downs Maiden Frolic and posted the fastest qualifying time of 16.998. Trials were open to 3-year-olds and up who were maidens as of January 1, 2018. The 350-yard final is scheduled for May 28.

Dashair Special ($3.20) is a homebred for Larry Chapple, bred in Idaho by Dashair, out of the Special Leader mare Special Truth. Mark Hanson trains; Jesus Canales had the call for Sunday’s trial.

The 3-year-old gelding was a heavy favorite in the second trial and defeated the field by nearly two lengths. Previously, Dashair Special had qualified for the Rocky Mountain Spring Classic Futurity last May at Pocatello as well as the Idaho Cup Futurity at Sandy Downs last summer.

The second trial produced not only the fastest qualifier but the second-fastest as well: Wind Charged with a time 17.269. Wind Charged and jockey Raymundo Torres put a length between them and third-place finisher and sixth-fastest qualifier A Stubby Corona.

The Idaho-bred filly is owned by Travis and Wendy Saxton; Travis Saxton also trains. Wind Charged was bred by Sherman Mansfield, by Furyofthewind and out of the Brimmerton mare Cinnful.

Wind Charged has now hit the board three times in eight lifetime starts. This was her first start at Pocatello after campaigning at Los Alamitos last summer and fall.

Third fastest qualifier O Dee ($7.20) won the first of three trials for the Maiden Frolic by a neck over post-time favorite Fat N Furious. Mark Hanson and Jesus Canales also teamed up for the win and the 3-year-old gelding covered the 350 yards in 17.310.

The son of One Dashing Eagle is owned by Robin Dunn, Larry Chapple, and RTM Stables LLC. O Dee was bred in Alabama by Paris Wixon, out of the graded stakes winning mare Miranda Fame, by Dash Ta Fame. This was just his third lifetime start and his first since his trial for the Bitterroot Futurity last June.

The winner of the third and final trial, Edwinna, posted the fourth fastest qualifying time with 17.338. The 6-year-old daughter of Breezing Beduino was ridden by Jesus Valenzuela for owner and trainer Javier Duarte. Edwinna ($20.20) was bred in Utah by Melvin Mower, out of Hard Cache by Hard Tact.
