Fastest Qualifier Dashair Special Returns to win Spring Classic Maiden Frolic in Pocatello

POCATELLO, ID—MAY 28, 2018—The $23,400 Spring Classic Maiden Frolic Stakes (not black type) appeared to turn into a match race between Mark Hanson trainees Dashair Special and O Dee, as the pair dueled to the wire a length and a half ahead of the rest. Dashair Special, with Jesus Canales aboard, won the nose bob and was the fastest qualifier to the final on Memorial Day at Pocatello.

Dashair Special ($2.80) was the easy favorite after he broke his maiden in his trial race, winning by two lengths. The 3-year-old gelding returned to the final with a final time of 17.343 and a speed index of 111.

Bred in Idaho by his owner, Larry Chapple, Dashair Special is by Dashair and is out of the Special Leader mare Special Truth. Previously, Dashair Special had qualified for the Rocky Mountain Spring Classic Futurity last May at Pocatello as well as the Idaho Cup Futurity at Sandy Downs last summer.

Dashair Special’s stablemate O Dee was the second-place finisher by a narrow margin; the 3-year-old gelding also earned a 111 speed index with a final time of 17.344. O Dee and Nikeela Black dueled gamely at 14-4 despite being the third fastest qualifier to the Spring Classic Maiden Frolic.

The son of One Dashing Eagle is owned by Robin Dunn, Larry Chapple, and RTM Stables LLC. O Dee was bred in Alabama by Paris Wixon, out of the graded stakes winning mare Miranda Fame, by Dash Ta Fame.

Leading the rest of the field was Fat N Furious, with Cordarelton Benn aboard for trainer Garth Blattner. He was the second wagering choice and still posted a speed index of 104 with a third-place effort.

Fat N Furious is owned by Craig Giles Racing LLC and was bred in Calfornia by Vinewood Farms. The lightly raced 3-year-old was making just his second lifetime start in Monday’s race.

Fat N Furious is by High Rate of Return and is out of Miss Kelly Kip, by Kelly Kip.

Completing the field were Edwinna, Wind Charged, Shes Alright Now, Vf Whole Lota Pyc, Little Miss Diesel, Jump Jive N Winnie and A Stubby Corona.
