SELMA, TX—JULY 28, 2018—The second feature this evening at Retama Park was the running of the $139,300 Retama Park Derby. A quality field of 3-year-olds from trials contested on July 14 entered the gate with a thrilling finish between EOS A Political Win and Three Bar Cartel resulting in a dead heat for the championship.

EOS A Political Win ($5.00), owned by Elite Oilfield Services, and trained by Rolando Almanza, broke from the rail under Jose Alvarez, recording his sixth win from 14 starts.

Strong as a 2-year-old, the son of leading sire Apollitical Jess is having a solid year, shipping to Retama Park following his third-place finish in the $364,000 Heritage Place Derby. He set the fifth-fastest qualifying time in his trial, covering 400-yards in the final in :19.720 seconds.

Bred in Oklahoma by Rey and Celia Nieto, EOS A Political is out of the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Pithia. He has compiled a (14) 6-4-2 record and banked $240,860.

Three Bar Cartel ($5.20), with Jesse Levario in the saddle, closed from his far outside post to also earn a 102 speed index. The gelded son of Capo de Capi races for Ruben Garcia Montemayor and has now won five of his seven starts.

Trained by Alonso Neri, the Dash for Cash Futurity winner was victorious earlier this year in the 110-yard Texas Twister at Sam Houston Race Park.

Dr. Curtis Smith bred the gray gelding in Oklahoma from the Mr Eye Opener mare Eyesa Ridicolous To. The five-time winner has earned more than $197,000.

Both winners earned $39,700 for their first place finish.

Sr Shambles with Manuel Gutierrez up, was third by a neck in the blanket-finish for owner Ruben Garcia Montemayor and trainer Alonso Neri. Manuel Gutierrez was riding the multiple stakes winning Desiro gelding out of Parisz by Azoom.

Bred in Oklahoma by Jovetta Meredith, Sr Shambles picked up $13,930 to boost his earnings to over $151,000.

Fastest qualifier Thecartelofmiracle, ridden by Jorge Linares, was fourth. Cosmo Lela, Classy Seis, Serendipity Rocks, Hesa Icon, Vella Buena and Krash Course completed the order of finish.
