HOBBS, NM—SEPTEMBER 23, 2019—Mr Perry Strong, under jockey Felipe Garcia-Luna got his first win of the year Sunday when the took the fourth of five trials for the Hobbs America Derby(G3) at Zia Park.

Mr Perry Strong won his trial by one-length while clocking :21.529 seconds for the 440 yards to secure the top qualifying time for the Grade 3 event.

The 10 fastest qualifiers, from 44 3-year-olds who participated in the trials, will return to Zia Park on Sunday, October 7th to vie for the winner's share of $200,000-est purse.

Mr Perry Strong was the first of two qualifiers conditioned by veteran trainer Michael Joiner. Licon Farm and Ranch LLC own the stakes winning son of leading sire Mr Jess Perry from the Strawfly Special mare Strength In Numbers.

Bred in Louisiana by Grant Farms, LLC, Mr Perry Strong won the Ruidoso Juvenile and was third in the Hobbs American Futurity(G2) last season. He has earned $73,771.

Joiner's second qualifier Legacy Eagle, owned by Johnny Trotter and Randy Geiselman, finished second in the second trial to get the 7th fastest time.

Fdd Can Jazz ran the biggest race of his career to score a three-quarter length win in the final trial, securing the second fastest time of :21.654 seconds, a 97 speed index.

A finalist in the Four Corners Futurity last season, the son of FDD Dynasty has won two of 11 career starts and earned $29,009. Marcos Carrizales trains the sorrel gelding for owner Felipe Flores, Sr. Jorge Haddad bred Fdd Can Jazz in Texas from the Corona Cartel mare Jazzy Corona. Santos Carrizales was riding.

Heza Streakin Legacy got his second career win in the second trial to post the third fastest time of :21.685 seconds. Ridden by Jose Alvarez, the son of leading sire Heza Fast Dash surged clear of the aforementioned Legacy Eagle to win by three-quarters.

It was the first win since the gray colt won his All American Futurity(G1) trial at Ruidoso Downs last summer. He qualified for the $3 million race but could not enter back after failing to pass a hair test.

Dominic Rivera conditions Heza Streakin Legacy for owner Martin C. Ybarra, Jr. Donald Friesen bred the colt in Oklahoma from the Streakin La Jolla mare Legacys A Streakin.

Ruidoso Derby(G1) winner Jess Move You won the opening trial under jockey Raul Ramirez, Jr. to get the fourth fastest clocking of :21.704 seconds, a 94 speed index.

Entering the race off a fifth place effort in the Grade 1 All American Derby last month, Jess Move You is owned by Ricardo Bernal and Reymundo Resendez.

Jesus Carrete conditions the Oklahoma-bred son of leading sire Apollitical Jess out of Gonna Move You by Royal Shake Em. Also a finalist in the Grade 1 Rainbow Derby this summer, the Debbie Strebig-bred gelding has earned $473,921.
