Bringonthewave Fastest Qualifier to Canada Quarter Horse Cup Derby at Century Downs

ROCKY VIEW, AB—OCTOBER 7, 2018— The two overall fastest qualifiers to the Canada Quarter Horse Cup Derby finished a first and second by a head in the second of two trials at Century Downs on Sunday afternoon.

The winner of the second trial, Bringonthewave, and jockey Ramiro Castillo, finished first with a time of :20.209 in the 400-yard time trial.

The $35,000-estimated Canada Quarter Horse Cup Derby will be held on October 21.

Bringonthewave ($8.40) was the second choice among the wagering public, while the horse who finished second behind him, Stripsteak, was a heavy favorite.

Bringonthewave entered the trial fresh off a win in the $35,000 Alberta Bred Derby in late September. The son of Wave Carver is a multiple stakes winner and qualifier. He began his career with a four-win streak that included the Alberta Bred Futurity (RG3) and suffered his first career loss in the Canada Quarter Horse Cup Futurity (RG3) last fall.

The 3-year-old gelding is trained by James Doolin for owner Dale Zukowski. He was bred in Alberta by Shady Lane Stables, out of Special Corona, by Corona Cartel.

Stripsteak was a deserving favorite and closed well to chip into Bringonthewave’s early lead. The 3-year-old son of One Sweet Jess was in search of his fourth consecutive win heading into the trial.

Stripsteak’s time of 20.242 placed him as the second fastest overall qualifier for trainer William Leech and owner Charles Stojan. He was bred in California by Steve Burns, DVM, out of the Separatist mare Ruths Chris.

His win streak includes a win in the $26,000 Peace Country Derby at Grand Prairie. He also qualified for the Canada Quarter Horse Cup Futurity (RG3) and the Grande Prairie Juvenile Challenge as a 2-year-old.

The winner of the third trial posted the third fastest overall time. Jd Wagon Boss and D. I. Benitez picked up a time of 20.461 in their victory by a neck over favorite True Copy.

Jd Wagon Boss ($5.20) is owned and trained by Buckey Stockwell. The 3-year-old colt was bred in Oklahoma by Jean Dillard, by Pyc Paint Your Wagon and out of Elly Mae, by Fishers Dash.

As a 2-year-old, Jd Wagon Boss won the Grande Prairie Juvenile Challenge and finished second in the national final, the John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship (G2) at Prairie Meadows. He finished second behind Stripsteak in the Peace Country Derby and qualified for the Ruidoso Derby Challenge in June.
