Jess Dashn Steps Up To Get First Stakes Win In Mike Hastings Memorial

PHOENIX, AZ—DECEMBER 9, 2018—Coming off a second-place effort for a $5,000-tag last month at Zia Park, Jess Dashn stepped up today to defeat Dig Deeper by three-quarters in the $19,000 Mike Hastings Memorial Stakes at Turf Paradise. It was the first career stakes win for the 5 year-old.

Under jockey Elias Gutierrez, Jess Dashin drifted out but held well to complete the 400 yards in :20.095 seconds. The $11,544 winner's purse boosted the Jess Marmeta gelding's earnings to $47,984.

Trainer Juan Figueroa saddled Jess Dashn for owner Carlos Manuel Reyes. Bred in New Mexico by Tommy Bouldin, Jess Dashn is out of the Dash Ta Fame mare Dashing Nights.

Runner-up Dig Deeper chased under jockey Jose Arriola-Serrano to get second for owner-trainer Alex Torres-Casas. Martha Wells bred the multiple stakes-placed One Sweet Jess gelding in California from the Corona Cartel mare Halfpast Aheartbreak. The $3,724 second-place payday boosted the 3-year-olds earnings total to $28,542.

Matts Corona got a clean trip under jockey Rodolfo Arvizu to finish third, a half-a-length off Dig Deeper. Racing for owner Melesio Arvizu and trainer Ubaldo Guerrero, the Corona Czech 4-year-old picked up $1,862 for the effort. Lynn, Becky and Lowell Hunsman bred Matts Corona in South Dakota from the Dean Miracle mare Homemade Miracle.

Special Train, El Tipasso, Liddle Doc and Jenna Cartel completed the field.
