Unrestrained Steps Up In Class, Fastest Qualifier To AQRA President's Open Spring Derby Trials

PHOENIX, AZ—MARCH 31, 2019—Ridden by jockey Jake Samuels, Unrestrained out-finished stakes winner First Lady Perry by half-a-length to post the fastest qualifying time for the AQRA President's Open Spring Derby Sunday afternoon at Turf Paradise.

The 10 fastest qualifiers, from three trials contested on Sunday, will return to Turf Paradise on Sunday, March 14th to vie for the winner's share of a $10,000-added purse going 350 yards.

Unrestrained, a California-bred son of Kiddy Up, stepped out of the claiming ranks for the first time on Sunday to complete the 350 yards in :17.546 seconds, a 102 speed index, to set the top qualifying mark.

It was the third consecutive win for the sorrel gelding who was claimed in his last start January 11th at Los Alamitos Race Course for $16,000. Prior to that he won for $16,000 on December 16th at the Orange County facility.

Saddled by trainer Jesus Olivas, Unrestrained was making his first career start off the West Coast for new owner Cristina Salas. Bred by Edward C. Allred, from the Check Him Out mare Thinking Out Loud, he has earned $22,341.

Runner-up stakes winner First Lady Perry held on for the second fastest clocking of :17.623 seconds, a 99 speed index. John Allred conditions the daughter of leading sire Mr Jess Perry for owner Scott McDaniel. McColee Land & Livestock, LLC bred the bay filly in Utah from the Heza Fast Man First Lady Amber. Coming off a win in the $48,735 AQRA Turf Paradise Futurity in her last start, First Lady Perry has compiled an (8) 3-3-0 record and banked nearly $35,000. Mark Jasso had the riding assignment.

New Moon Dynasty, a royally bred son of world champion sire FDD Dynasty owned by Bobby Simmons, defeated Ur My Favorite by a neck in the second trial to record the third fastest clocking of :17.664 seconds, a 97 speed index.

Joe Bassett conditions the lightly raced son out of the multiple stakes winner and multiple stakes-producer Nagano Moon by Major Rime. Today's trial was the first win four starts for the brown colt who started at Ruidoso Downs and Los Alamitos as a 2-year-old.

Jessa Cat, a stakes-placed daughter of second-crop sire Stray Cat was a neck winner over Im Rocket Man in the opening trial to get the sixth fastest qualifying time of :17.729 seconds, a 96 speed index.

Jose Botello owns-and-trains the Missouri-bred filly from the Mr Jess Perry mare Jessa Runner. Second in the AQRA Turf Paradise Futurity in December, Jessa Cat was ridden by jockey Kevin Carbajal. William O. Dale bred the two-time winner of $15,495.
