Pitchforks Panther Posts Fastest Time in Golden Spike Futurity Trials

OGDEN, UT—APRIL 13, 2019—Trials filled the card on opening day at Weber Downs on Saturday; the track hosted five trials for the $33,800 Jake Kapp Maiden Frolic, then eight trials for the $54,100 Golden Spike Futurity.

In the fourth of eight trials for the 2019 edition of the Golden Spike Futurity, Pitchforks Panther and jockey Carlos Guillen Chacon became the fastest qualifier with a time of 15.822 and an 89 speed index.

The winning duo finished nearly a length in front of second-place finisher Valentina Relentless, who was the fifth fastest qualifier in 15.919.

Pitchforks Panther is trained by Roberto Treto and is a homebred for Victor Ortiz. Ortiz bred the gelded son of Dominyun in Colorado, and he is out of the Panther Mountain mare Special Lady Panther.

A dead heat in the following trial resulted in a tie for the second fastest qualifying time: Jr Czech Dynasty and Chance To Be Valiant hit the wire together with a final time of 15.844.

Jr Czech Dynasty was ridden by Jesus Valenzuela for trainer Riley Moosman; Jr Stables bred and owns the 2-year-old colt. Jr Czech Dynasty was bred in Utah, by Jr Dynasty Mountain and out of Jr Czech Swing, by Swingin Jess.

Chance To Be Valiant, also a Utah-bred colt, was ridden by Danny Marshall and is trained by Jordan Hadley. Tom Close owns and bred the son of Jess Being Valiant, out of the Foose mare Last Chancer.

Of all the horses entered in the eight trials, only one had made a previous career start and he returned to the track to break his maiden in his second career start. Third fastest qualifier Wagonfullofdarlings won the third trial by a length and a half to post a time of 15.890.

Carlos Guillen Chacon and Roberto Treto also teamed up for the win with Wagonfullofdarlings, who is owned by Rosa Urquidi. Ruben Chavez bred the gelding in Colorado, by Wagon Tales and out of the Streakin Six mare Denim Darling.

Wagonfullofdarlings debuted at Remington Park last month, finishing third in a trial for the Oklahoma Futurity.

The 300-yard final is scheduled for April 27, 2019.
