Why Surprises in Rainbow QH Juvenile

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JULY 22, 2019—While Uncle D made his Rainbow Futurity(G1) win look easy, stablemate Why had to work for her win in the $100,000 Rainbow Quarter Horse Juvenile.

Why was in the sixth post position and 13-10 favorite Return of Brown Eyes drew the fifth post position.

"I thought Return of Brown Eyes was the horse to beat," jockey Cody Smith said. "Why got away from the gate with Return of Brown Eyes and Why had enough left to get past Return of Brown Eyes."

Why underwent an equipment change for the Rainbow Juvenile. Trainer Clinton Crawford extended the blinkers’ cup to help her concentrate and that paid off, according to Crawford and Smith.

Why, at 23-1 odds, defeated Return of Brown Eyes by a head with a winning time of :19.943 for the 400 yards. Return of Brown Eyes finished three quarters of a length ahead of Shannon Power.

The daughter of all-time leading sire First Down Dash broke her maiden in the Juvenile for owner Cavenaugh Quarter Horses, LLC. She completed the course in :19.943 seconds, an 88 speed index with a 6 mph crosswind, to pocket the winner's purse valued at $42,000.

Cavenaugh purchased Why for $52,000 as a short-yearling at the 2018 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale in Oklahoma City. She is out of the Carters Cartel mare Whip Curl. Lazy Creek Ranch is the breeder.

Diamond Racing Stables and US Alliance Logistic’s Return Of Brown Eyes, trained by Jose Muela, came into the Juvenile with three wins and a close second-place run in the Grade 2, $323,571 West Texas Futurity.

The gelding by High Rate Of Return, from the Mr Eye Opener mare Brown Eye Suze, was ridden by Sergio Beccera Jr. Return Of Brown Eyes earned $18,000 for the effort to boost his bankroll to $91,183. Flag Ranch LLC is the breeder.

Larry Rice paid $14,000 for third-place finisher Shannon Power, a daughter of leading first crop sire Hes Relentless, at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale.

Eddie D. Willis trains the Oklahoma-bred filly out of Sanachee by Country Chicks Man. J. Garvan Kelly is the breeder and Jimmy Brooks had the riding call. She earned $10,000.

Fightn Side Of Me, Kiss Me Anywhere, Juice Is Lose, Platinumm, Southern Wagon and Avyator completed the field.
