Wagon Chick V Scores Narrow Upset In Mr Jet Moore 'Cap at Ruidoso Downs

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—AUGUST 3, 2019—MJR Investments, Ltd.'s Wagon Chick V prevailed in a tight finish at 12-1 odds to beat the boys as the only mare in the Grade 2, $50,000 Mr Jet Moore Handicap at Ruidoso Downs on Saturday afternoon.

Wagon Chick V battled side-by-side with New News and the mare came up a nose ahead at the wire with a :19.740 time for the 400 yards over a track labeled muddy (sealed). It was a neck back to third-place finisher Rarin.

Two-time world champion Jessies First Down, the 13-10 favorite, finished eighth after starting from the inside post position.

The track was hit with heavy rain earlier in the afternoon and the rain caused a delay in the racing program.

Jockey Juan Pulido got Wagon Chick V away from the gates in good order from the fourth post position and hooked up with New News, in the third post position, and they fought for most of the 400 yards. Rarin made a late charge to challenge the top-two finishers, however came up short.

Trainer Clint Crawford said that Wagon Chick V thrives at Ruidoso Downs. "She been a good filly. She was fourth in the All American Derby last year," Crawford said. "Then this year at Remington Park she wouldn't get out of the gate and then she got up here and has been starting well."

A daughter of Pyc Paint Your Wagon, Wagon Chick V prepared for the Mr Jet Moore with a one-half length conditioned allowance race victory on July 21 at Ruidoso Downs.

At Remington Park this year, Wagon Chick V was third in an allowance race and off the board in the Grade 2, $106,400 Junos Request Stakes and the Grade 3, $50,000 Decketta Stakes.

Wagon Chick V could make her next start in the Grade 1, $200,000 All American Gold Cup at Ruidoso Downs on September 1.

Elco Armendariz and Omar Ruiz Jr.'s runner-up New News was the fastest qualifier to the Grade 3, $210,852 West Texas Derby at Sunland Park and returned on April 20 to win the derby by a neck as the odds-on favorite. The gelding by Majestic Cartel won his maiden in his start before his West Texas Derby trial.

Tanner Thedford rode New News for trainer Ricardo Armendariz.

Olaya Munoz Duarte's Rarin showed his speed and raced to his third consecutive victory when he won the Grade 2, $50,000 Higheasterjet Handicap by one-and-one-quarter lengths in his previous start on June 29 at Ruidoso Downs. He posted a :17.326 time for the 350 yards.

The Rudy Valles-trained gelding by Inseperable came into the Higheasterjet off a win in the $50,000 La Plata Stakes at SunRay Park while making his 2019 debut. He closed out his 2018 campaign with a win in the Grade 3, $50,000 James Isaac Hobbs Stakes at Zia Park.
