Cotton Cartel Breaks 33-Year-Old Track Record In Wine Country Derby Win

SANTA ROSA, CA—AUGUST 3, 2019—Cotton Cartel, under jockey Jose Dominguez, raced to a three-quarter length win and a new 400 yard track record in the $10,000 Wine Country Derby (not black type) Saturday afternoon at Santa Rosa.

A homebred racing for owner-breeder Ashley T. Garcia, Cotton Cartel completed the 400 yards in :19.740 seconds, equaling a 110 speed index. The previous record of :19.870 seconds was set August 3, 1986 by Sunset Rich.

Conditioned by trainer Angela Aquino, the chestnut daughter of Special Cartel got her third career win in six starts. The $5,610 winners' purse boosted the California-bred filly out of the Thoroughbred mare Cotton Belle by High Cotton's earnings total to $15,332.

Runner-up Hy On Corona races for owner Maria Corina Rodriguez and trainer Jose Puentes. Silvio Ruiz Amador had the riding call aboard the daughter of Stel Corona out of Royal Heights by Royal Quick Dash. Martha Wells is the breeder. up Hy On Corona earned $2,040 for the effort.

. Separate Intensions, a daughter of champion sire Separatist, finished a nose back in third to earn $1,244 for owner The Quarter Company LLC. Jockey Luis Godoy had the riding call for trainer Roman Figueroa. The California homebred is out of Serious Intentions by First Down Dash.

Redneck Woman, Lucky Ned and Remarkable Special completed the field.
