Sweet Twisted Tea(#6) holds off Marfilmio (#1) and Tyson Gay (#2) in the $19,150 RMQHA Championship Saturday afternoon at Arapahoe Park.

Sweet Twisted Tea Upsets RMQHA Championship

AURORA, CO—AUGUST 10, 2019—Sweet Twisted Tea (20-1) broke well then held on to defeat Marfilmio by a neck in the $19,150 RMQHA Championship Saturday at Arapahoe Park. Tyson Gay finished a head back in the blanket finish to get third.

Ridden by jockey Jonathan Dominguez, Sweet Twisted Tea completed the 400 yards in :19.893 seconds, equaling a 93 speed index into an 8 mph crosswind. It as the third career win for the son of Sweet First Down and the $11,490 winners' purse boosted her earning record to $58,701.

Owned-and-trained by David Palafox, the 4-year-old Iowa-bred gelding is from the Corona Cartel mare Dashing On The Moon. He has compiled a (19) 3-1-5 record. The RMQHA Championship was the first black type win for Sweet Twisted Tea.

Runner-up Marfilmio races for owner Hugo Barron Sierra and is trained by Jose Manuel Barron. Jesus Olivas rode the Texas-bred son of multiple stakes sire Ivory James from the Mr Jess Perry mare Sinuous. Bred by Bobby D. Cox, Marfilmio earned $3,830 for his effort.

Tyson Gay, a multiple stakes winning son of champion Foose, earned $1,915 for third. David Sanchez owns the 3-year-old out of Hawk Kue Pie by Hawksinson. Jockey Carlos Chacon had the riding call for trainer Miguel Pena aboard the California-bred gelding. Steve D. Burns, DVM is the breeder.

Sweet Twisted Tea rewarded backers with $40.20 to win, $9.80 to place and $6.40 to show. Marfilmio returned $4.60 and $3.20 while Tyson Gay paid $5 to place.

Toshi Yoshi, Another Shot, Dg Tempter, Dee Favorite Girl, My Big Chief and Jess Stormie completed the field. Paint Your Eagle scratched.
