First Lady Perry Battles For Top Mark in Arizona Downs QH Derby Trials

PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ—AUGUST 11, 2019—Stakes winner First Lady Perry broke out and bumped under jockey Jake Samuels but still managed to get her head in front of El Saucito to set the fastest qualifying time for the $10,000-added Arizona Downs Quarter Horse Derby Sunday afternoon.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to Arizona Downs on Sunday, September 1 to vie for the winner's share of the purse going 400 yards.

Saddled by trainer John Allred, First Lady Perry rolled over the 400 yard course in a quick :19.598 seconds, earning a114 speed index into a 10 mph crosswind while posting the top qualifying mark.

It was the first win in four starts this season for the Scott McDaniel owned daughter of Mr Jess Perry. Winner of last year's AQRA Turf Paradise Futurity, the bay filly has compiled a (10) 405-0 record and banked nearly $47,000. McColee Land & Livestock bred First Lady Perry in Utah from the Heza Fast Man mare First Lady Amber.

Also bumped at the start El Saucito put in a strong effort to finish second while getting the second fastest time of :19.609 seconds, also a 114 speed index. Owned-and-trained by Rigoberto Guillen the multiple stakes-placed son of Favorite Cartel has earned $25,020.

Salvador Prmienta bred the black gelding in Arizona from the Tres Seis mare Sonora Cartel. He entered the race off back-to-back stakes-placed finishes in the Robert Huebeck and the Desert Classic Derby.
