Dm First Talent Tops Qualifiers to TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity

SELMA, TX – AUGUST 16, 2019 - A gate-to-wire winner of the first of four trials on Friday night at Retama, Dm First Talent posted the overall fastest qualifying time to the $110,000 TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity.

The $ final will be run back on Saturday, August 31.

Dm First Talent ($26.80) and jockey Francisco Calderon upset the field with a time of 18.010 in the 350-yard trial and cleared the field by over a length. Trained by Roberto Madrigal, the filly is a Texas homebred for Dora Martinez, by Jess Lips and out of Prime Idol, by Prime Talent.

The TQHA Sires’ Cup will be first stakes start for Dm First Talent, who had two previous career starts, including a win, at Delta.

The second fastest qualifier, Easy Blinkers, won the third trial with a time of 18.027. Eddie Sanchez piloted the gelding home in his first career win in two starts, both at Retama.

Easy Blinkers ($20.40) is trained by Angel Sanchez for owner and breeder Pamela Stone. He is sired by Dealagame and is out of the Special Effort mare Wide Open Effort.

Third fastest qualifier Doc Hockaday won the fourth and final trial of the night in 18.117. Doc Hockaday ($3.00) led from the gate to win by a half length with Antonio Alberto aboard.

A heavy post-time favorite, Doc Hockaday made his fifth career start in Friday’s trial. He qualified to the $308,000 Firecracker Futurity (G2) at Delta, finishing fourth, and the $459,700 Sam Houston Futurity (G2), finishing sixth. He won his Firecracker Futurity trial, making the TQHA Sires Cup trial his second career win.

The Kiss My Hocks gelding is trained by Robi Meche for owners Tyler Graham and Jose Fabian Hernandez. He was bred in Texas by County Line Runners, and is out of the Dean Miracle mare Deans Dusty Bunny.
