American Hussle Wins Maiden with the Top Time in $1.5-million All American Derby Trials at Ruidoso D

American Hussle Wins Maiden with the Top Time in $1.5-million All American Derby Trials at Ruidoso D

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—AUGUST 17, 2019—Rogelio Marquez Jr.'s American Hussle posted his first win when he scorched the Ruidoso Downs straightaway to set the fastest-qualifying time of :21.132 for 440 yards in the trials to the Grade 1, $1,550,855 All American Derby on Sunday afternoon.

The horses with the 10-fastest times from the 12 trials qualified for the All American Derby on September 1 at Ruidoso Downs. The horses with the next 10-fastest times gained priority to race in the $100,000 First Down Dash on September 1 at Ruidoso Downs.

American Hussle humbled his rivals in the 11th trial on this way to the two-and-three-quarter-length win.

"He just left the start gate well and went on a finished well," jockey James Flores said. "He's doing really well now and ran a good race."

Trained by Marcos Carrizales, American Hussle had made six previous starts and managed a pair of seconds and two third-place finishes. The son of Apollitical Jess has never competed in a stakes race.

Ryansmanonthemoon (#6) battles fellow qualifier America Rules (#3) for the 2nd and 3rd fastest times in the closing trial.

A year ago at Ruidoso Downs, American Hussle was disqualified from second in his Rainbow Futurity trial and finished third in his All American Futurity trial.

Jimmy Negrete and Jimmy Vasquez's homebred Ryansmanonthemoon, a New Mexico-bred, won the final trial in :21.263 while winning by neck over America Rules, who posted the third-fastest qualifying time of :21.297.

Mauro Salcedo rode Ryansmanonthemoon for trainer Cynthia Gonzalez.

Ryansmanonthemoon, a gelding by First Moonflash, has been successful against state-breds this year. He won the $211,000 Shue Fly Stakes and the $85,000 NMHBA Stakes at Sunland Park. He came into his All American Derby trial off a close second-place run in the $50,000 Zia Handicap against older New Mexico-breds.

Coke Gage's America Rules, trained by Gerald Reed, has been winless since she won her Rainbow Futurity trial last summer at Ruidoso Downs. She showed her class when she was eighth in the Grade 1, $1,008,129 Rainbow Derby in his start before the All American Derby trials.

The Corona Cartel-sired filly was ridden by Flores.

Paragon Farms, LLC's reigning champion two-year-old colt Flying Cowboy 123, saddled by J.J. Gonzales, set the fourth-fastest qualifying time of :21.299 when he totally dominated his rivals while winning the first trial by two-and-three-quarter lengths. The colt went to the lead and then pulled away.

"Today he was all business and professional," jockey Ricky Ramirez said. "He didn't blink in the gate.

"He's a cool horse and one of my barn favorites. He is laid back and loves his job."

A half-brother to world champion Cold Cash 123, Flying Cowboy 123 secured his 2018 champion two-year-old colt title when he won the Grade 1, $1,015 Texas Classic Futurity last November.

Paragon Farms LLC announced on Saturday that the champion son of Apollitical Jess would begin his stallion career in 2020 at Bob Moore Farms in Norman, Oklahoma (see related story).

Flying Cowboy 123, a $100,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale purchase, returned this year to finish fourth in the Grade 1, $958,766 Ruidoso Derby as the 5-2 favorite.

Licon Farm and Ranch, LLC's Tools in the Sky won the fourth trial by a neck over Valiant Tiberias and they recorded the fifth- and sixth-fastest qualifying times. Tools in the Sky was timed in :21.361 while Valiant Tiberias was clocked in :21.402.

Tools in the Sky was ridden by Ramirez.

A gelding by First Down Dash, Tools in the Sky was fourth in the Grade 1, $3-million All American Futurity a year ago.

Owned by Sergio Holguin, Cliften Nielsen and Felix Rodriguez, Valiant Tiberias had a four-race winning streak this summer at Ruidoso Downs end with his runner-up finish.

The Ricardo Armendariz-trained Valiant Tiberias won the $116,840 Ruidoso Downs Maiden Stakes and the $53,108 Adequan Ruidoso Downs Derby Challenge.

Flores rode Valiant Tiberias in his All American Derby trial.

Also qualifying are Jest Famous, Flash and Roll and Jess Macho Corona. There will be a blind draw for the 10thand final qualifying spot between Rustys Miracle and Midday News.
