Fastest Qualifier Coronado Kiss Outduels Rival Proud Movin Renegade In Wild West Trials

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—OCTOBER 3, 2020—Having the experience of a start under the lights at Los Alamitos Race Course may have been just enough to help Andrea and Eddie Jensen’s Coronado Kiss outduel rival Proud Movin Renegade in the first of two trials to the $99,350 Wild West Futurity on Sunday at Los Alamitos.

Ridden by Jose Nicasio for trainer Monty Arrossa, Coronado Kiss beat Proud Movin Renegade by a nose to give him his first victory over that rival in three starts. The two had previously met in the trials to the Bitterroot Futurity and then in the $96,000 final with Proud Movin Renegade winning both times.

Coronado Kiss, a Utah-bred gelding by Coronado Cartel, turned the tables in their Wild West trial, leaving on top and holding on late on the way to posting the fastest qualifying time to the October 25 final. Bred by Allreds Horse Haven, Coronado Kiss covered the 350-yard distance in :17.739.

He had previously finished second to the impressive John Deere Los Alamitos Challenge winner Tres Of Jess in an allowance race on September 11. That effort plus this sharp trial win make Coronado Kiss a top contender in the Wild West final.

Owned and bred by Xg Bar Racing Llc, Proud Movin Renegade came in riding the crest of a four-race win streak. Upon his local arrival, the son of Maknmoves had a solo gate drill under the lights here on September 11 with the goal of getting acquainted with the local nightlife. Proud Movin Renegate worked nicely on that starry night and then nearly caught Coronado Kiss from post number one after bumping at the start. Jesus Valenzuela piloted the Idaho-bred for trainer Jose Flores.

There was no need for a photo finish in the other Wild West trial, as Silvia Carmona’s Relentless Six dominated to the tune of a 1-¼ length win in the third fastest qualifying time of :17.993. It could be that Relentless Six has a penchant for dominant victories in trials, as the North Dakota-bred also won his heat to the Firecracker Futurity at Grants Pass by 2-½ lengths.

Relentless Six’s trial win was the exclamation point to a fine weekend for his connections. Two nights ago, Carmona, winning trainer Danny Montes and winning jockey Ruben Lozano joined forces to win the Grade 2, $140,000 PCQHRA Breeders Derby with Jess A Little More, a horse that like Relentless Six had sharpened his skills in the Northwest region before impressing at Los Alamitos.
