OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MAY 3, 2021—Multiple graded stakes winning jockey Francisco Calderon won the 2015 Grade 2, $410,000 Oklahoma Futurity at Remington Park on Tee Chic. He may have found another stakes quality horse, winning fastest of 12 training races Wednesday at Remington Park aboard Wicked Baja.

Tee Chic, with Calderon up in the Oklahoma Futurity, out-nodded Big Lew for that victory by a head. In Wednesday’s 10th training race, he won by 1-¼ lengths in the irons of Wicked Baja for trainer Jose Lopez.

The sorrel filly’s time of :13.487 for 250 yards was the fastest of the day and she earned an 80 speed index for her efforts. She was the only horse of the day to hit 80. Her race was run into a 13mph headwind under sunny skies at 70 degrees.

Owned by Juan Medina of Zapata, Texas, Wicked Baja’s pedigree suggested she might do this. She is a 2-year-old by world champion and multiple stakes sire One Dashing Eagle, out of the Teller Cartel mare Teller Baja.

Her dam, Teller Baja, won the Grade 2, $888,000 Remington Park Futurity in 2016. She won 6-of-10 starts lifetime for earnings of $464,317. Her sire, One Dashing Eagle, was the American Quarter Horse Association World Champion in 2012. He won six of seven lifetime starts and earnings in excess of $2 million. Teller Baja’s sire, Teller Cartel, won the top annual Quarter Horse race, the All American Futurity in 2005. The bloodlines spell success for Wicked Baja, who will be making her first career start this Remington meet.

Teller Baja outshone a field of eight horses in her training race. Calderon has won 22 graded stakes races in his career, including four grade 1s. He won the 2020 Grade 1 Texas Classic Derby aboard Perrys Double Down, the 2019 Grade 1 AQHA Bank of America Challenge Championship and 2018 Grade 1 Refrigerator Stakes with SF Hot Pass, and the 2016 Grade 1 AQHA Distaff Challenge Championship with Time for Wine.
