Staubauch Gate-to-Wire Winner in Governor's Cup Handicap at Wyoming Downs

EVANSTON, WY—AUGUST 1, 2021—Multiple stakes winner Staubach defeated Df Storm Tales by three-quarters Sunday to win the $14,500 Governor's Cup Handicap (not black type) at Wyoming Downs.

Under jockey Jesus Canales, Staubauch was a gate-to-wire winner while completing the 300 yards in :15.471 seconds, a 98 speed index into a 7 mph headwind. It was the ninth career win for the son of multiple stakes sire Texas Icon and the $7,540 winner's purse boosted his bankroll to $51,429.

Jere Brinkerhoff trains the 5-yaer-old Arizona-bred gelding for owner Gabriel Caballo. Bred by Ralph and Carolyn Fales, from the Rocky Jones mare Girls Rock, Staubach has compiled a (23) 9-5-2 record. He won the South Valley Futurity at 2 and the John Ward Overnight Handicap at Los Alamitos last year.

Also a stakes winner, Df Storm Tales races for owner Mertello Baird and is conditioned by trainer Kyndra McKinney. Jockey Clay Teeter had the riding call aboard the 4-year-old son of Wagon Tales from the Thoroughbred mare Storm's Promise by Seattle Fitz. Third in the Bank of America Grants Pass Championship Challenge in June, Df Strom Tales earned $3,335 to bring his earnings total to $36,298.

Kirk Woof and Ralph Hartline's stakes winning gelding Fantastic Minion finished a nose back to earn $1,688 for third. Trainer Jay Pitcher named Gerardo Vera to ride the Fantastic Corona Jr 6-yaer-old out of Gigard by Dash To Chivato. Bred in Utah by Woolf, Fantastic Minion is a seven-time winner and has earned $83,212.

Freight Boss, Rays Lane, Gotta Lotta Papa, A Toast To Brindis, Brindis Cruz and Mr Buddy completed the field.
